Thank you for replying, Phil.

I cannot see emoticons on genes reunited, but have happily used them for a few years now on various other sites.

All such issues being referred to genes reunited in this board should have been sorted out before the recent changes to the site were implemented, in my opinion.

Thank you Phil for your response

But I am not keeping my fingers crossed

This should not have been allowed to happen. There should have been more testing before going live on site

Sadly, some of us do work on Bank Holidays. I completely agree with you all about the annoyance factor when they are displaying when they weren't intended.

Such as when you put colon at then end of the line, what is saved is the colon ":" followed by the html character for new line, which is less than symbol followed by "br" then "/" then greater than symbol. The combination of the colon and first character of new line creates the icon. We will sort this out for the next release (due later this week).

From this thread, the situations are

Colon at end of line:

B D M together displays as BDM

E X Perience displays as EXPerience

For the record, the icons were implemented following user requests.

So, a reply sometime towards the end of July then? :D

I must admit to liking emoticons as and when I want to use them but, it's a nuisance when they crop up uninvited :-(

I think the faces on Rootschat are more fun because some of them move! I really must get a life.......lol

Memo to self.......get out more ;-)

Have you received an answer to your question to "theteam" by email?

WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!

XP

or, as this previously read

WHAT AN E:-PERIENCE!

:-P

MaryMc

MaryMc Report 27 May 2011 23:32

See what I mean! i can't post bdm in capitals!

MaryMc

MaryMc Report 27 May 2011 23:31

Janey, I totally agree!

All the census posted now looks like a complete dogs breakfast, it's awful.

I didn't know what was happening when I posted a census, until someone kindly explained it to me.

Also happened when I posted BDM (bdm) in capitals

We can't possibly remember all the emoticon codes when we're typing!

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 27 May 2011 23:13

Just to clarify too -- those of us who don't use browsers that show us the emoticons are still causing the problem for other users.

When the codes are accidentally inserted in a post -- for instance, a colon followed by a hard line return (new line), or a capital X and P together, or a capital B and D together -- you may not see the stupidfaces, but many (most?) people reading your post do.

So when you say B.D.M (without the periods), you see capital B, capital D, capital M, but we see a big smiling idiotface followed by a capital M.

So I've sent the question to "theteam" by email.

Maybe I'll get an answer.

WHEN WILL THE EMOTICON PROBLEM BE FIXED?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 21 May 2011 22:07

I'm very carefully sticking with my way out of date IE6!

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 21 May 2011 14:04

Exactly GB! Every post on this board -- thousands and thousands and thousands of them -- that uses colons at the end of a line (whether in the poster's own text or in copied and pasted census records that have not been reconstructed to make sense) is now a hideous mass of emoticons.

-- and GB -- even though *you* don't see the emoticons in census records you post, everybody using Firefox, for example, does. Including any poor newbie trying to figure out wtf you are throwing all those stupidfaces into the middle of census records for.

And I lol-ed at this in your post:

Just looked at the properties on IE and there is a mention of compatabilites modes cannot be set on this program becuase it is part of Windows XP.

You won't see it -- but because X+P is the code for an emoticon, those of us with the "right" browsers see that as

Windows followed by the emoticon for a stuck-out tongue

that being how I discovered *that* problem in the first place, so that's why words like EXPLAIN in my posts in this thread look ridiculous. It looks like I'm screwing up my face (like the little boy with the lisp in The Music Man) and saying

ECKTHHPLAIN!

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 21 May 2011 12:23

Oh

Switched backed to compatibility view as really do not like the emoticon when posting census info on threads

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 21 May 2011 12:17

Unticked the compatibility and can now see the emoticons

Not sure I am that bothered with using them but at least it gets rid of those strange mixtures of symbols and letters so the postings do make more sense

Joy

Joy Report 21 May 2011 12:12

One should not have to change one's browser to suit this site, and I shall not do so :-)

TootyFruity

TootyFruity Report 21 May 2011 12:06

Glitter Baby you need to untick the compatibility view then you will get your emoticons working properly. It was my mistake on my last post. Sorry.

I know most sites its the other way round but I suppose GR has to be different :D
