TOOTS WHATS WRONG WITH CAPITAL LETTERS SURELY YOU CAN READ THIS EASY ENOUGH CANT YOU ITS WHEN PEOPLE DONT PUT FULL STOPS AND COMMAS AND OTHER SUCH STUFF THAT IT BECOMES ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO READ I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE POST LIKE THAT I JUST SWITCH OFF AS I CANT BE BOTHERED TO READ THE REST OF IT STILL IT WOULDNT DO FOR US ALL TO BE SAME NOW WOULD IT IF YOU HAVE A DISBILITY THEN OF COURSE IT MIGHT BE EASIER TO TYPE IN CAPITALS AND THATS TOTALLY UNDERSTANDABLE AND ACCEPTABLE

Capital letters in Titles help to make a thread stand out however it all titles where in capitals then nothing would stand out.

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 19 Jun 2011 12:29

I should have been more specific - I don't have a problem with caps for emphasis and titles.

Just "caps lock" on permanently in the text of the message.

Try to keep up if you can Ginny.

Just one last Hurrah for anyone (Other than me) who sees no harm in the use of capital letters in thread titles.

I've been using internet forums since 1998, and it has always been considered good 'netiquette' not to use all capitals, as it is seen as shouting.

The emphasis is on ALL capitals...ie, if your entire message is in capitals. I use the odd word or phrase in capitals for emphasis, especially as we don't have an underline option here.

However, in Dizzi's defence, though I find all caps harder to read, she doesn't. She has explained a lot of times over the years why she does it, and nobody sees it as shouting because we know that's not what she is doing. But if I put a post in all caps, I WOULD be seen to be shouting...because I don't normally do it.

Hi Mildred,

Do the forums that you refer to have any rules about the use of symbols such as ?+*¨^¨*+e+*¨^¨*+? in your board name? ;-)

By the way I think that your board name is great. :-D

"As for the shouting I had not heard of that until I came onto GR."

I use a few forums, and some do state that posts which are all in caps will be removed as this is akin to shouting on the boards. Those posts are removed by admins.

They also state posts all in caps are difficult to read & I agree

On the same forums they DO <----- ;-) allow a few words in the text to be in caps to highlight & bring them to peoples attention.

Muffyxx Report 19 Jun 2011 10:29

I sometimes use caps to emphasise certain words in a post. If I had the option of using bold text then I'd do that instead.

Maybe GR could look into giving us that option? x

Well if hoax-slayer who spends a lot of time hanging out in cyberspace says it then I guess it must be true. ;-)

P.S. Tooty,

That hoax-slayer site has some great hoax emails.

TootyFruity

TootyFruity Report 19 Jun 2011 09:49

Having said that I don't always think it is rude or shouting I think sometimes it is used for emphasis as in the title of this thread and Don't post the same family twice. Also, I don't think Dizzi is shouting either, it is just easier for her to type that way and so participate.

Edit: Sorry I didn't see Gwynne's post with the same link as I posted and as I'm only on iPhone can't see bottom of post to edit it off :-)

This is what Hoax Slayer has to say on the use of capitals

Email Etiquette Tip - DON'T SHOUT!

If you USE ALL CAPS in your email or message board posts, you will immediately make yourself seem inexperienced or ignorant. Most experienced computer users consider the use of all capital letters to be the Internet equivalent of shouting.

For those of us who spend a lot of time hanging out in cyberspace, messages written in all capital letters are reminiscent of trying to hold a conversation in which one person is shouting every word while others are speaking at a normal volume.

http://www.hoax-slayer.com/do-not-use-all-capitals.html

And also seems to be reiterated at simple help regarding netiquette

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 19 Jun 2011 09:39

I wouldn't say it's a myth, Jonsey. Google "netiquette and capital letters" and you'll get a lot of hits.

This is just one example from How to be polite while you're online (practicing good netiquette)

http://www.simplehelp.net/2006/08/14/how-to-be-polite-while-youre-online-practicing-good-netiquette/

"Don’t type in all capital letters
Typing in all capital letters on the Internet is considered rude because it is difficult to read and comes across as very aggressive (LIKE SHOUTING!). If you take away nothing from this ‘how-to’ other than knowing that typing in “caps” is widely despised on the Internet, consider it time well spent."

Like other posters I also find "Caps only" very hard to read.

I don't know about the shouting... I see that message conveyed a lot on here... I can understand it for emphasis Ginny.

I know in Advertising signage it is far easier to read the signs if they are upper and lower case not all upper case. Titles of books are the same. I saw the book CHURCHILL'S MOAT and on first look I wondered what a Mo At was instead of Moat. A friend of mine said he had done the same thing with CAIRO he wondered where Car eero was...

Sometimes we don't see what we should see and other times we see what we want to see.

As for the shouting I had not heard of that until I came onto GR. Some people type like that all the time... eg Dizzi... I don't believe she is shouting.

Jonesey Report 19 Jun 2011 08:28

Not sure who started the, "Capital letters is tantamount to shouting" myth, it is a complete nonsense.

People use capital letters for a number of reasons the main one being for emphasis. another being for clarity. Which stands out and conveys the intended message better?
