Photo Competition suggestion

I have a suggestion for future photo competitions (am I allowed to do this?). Since we have introduced Keepsafe, I would like to encourage use of it, and also help people learn how to use it to its full potential.

I think if the next photo competition advised that photos should be uploaded to people's Keepsafe, set to "share with everyone" and then tagged with the tag for the competition, set by Genes eg "Seaside Photo Competition 2012", then (a) members can use photos already in their Keepsafe (b) we (GR) can easily provide a link to all search results for that tagged item so everyone can review them (c) the same link can be shared on Facebook, keeping those who use this social media platform happy.

What do you think?

don't use Keepsafe

will never use Keepsafe

sorry Phil!

Not the type of thing I will be using anyway.

Why do you need to keep the users of Facebook happy ?

Patricia Report 28 Oct 2012 10:06

I don't enter these comps as I like control over any photos I post on the net.

I certainly wouldn't use something that is set to 'share with everyone' as then I lose that control.

And have you thought about any copyright problems that then may crop up? Just because you have a photo in your possession does not always mean you have the copyright to it.

If you do have copyright to a photo do you have permission to use that photo from any living people in it?

Photo comps always have been a bit of a minefield in mnay respects

Instead of mucking about with never ending gimmicks and trivialities why don't you get the core functionality working ?

In particular Support say that you are "aware" of the problem that Tree View for All / Descendants / Ancestors / List (and hence surname search) has not been working since the arrival of KeepSafe.

Your most recent post prattled on about another bunch of inconsequential updates and changes.

FOR GOODNESS SAKE JUST FIX THE THINGS THAT ARE BROKEN AND TAKE SOME TIME OFF - AS LONG AS YOU LIKE .

Maybe if Phil Mopire did not wear sun glasses at work he would be able to read the screen better and there would not be so many bugs.

Maybe Phil Moire wears sun glasses on account of the large bright screens used by GRU development and the recent color scheme changes.

fed up

Phil Moire and the Team have a burning desire to regard GRU as a "social media" platform and to integrate it with FaceBook etc. This is because (a) they truly believe that is the way forward and (b) it looks better on CVs. The way things are going on GRU (b) is getting to be important.

OTOH something like 70% of people doing online family history are over 50 and completely uninterested in Facebook. The rejection of FB is not because they are technical numskulls just that they reject the live-your-life-in-a-facebook-goldfish.bowl paradigm and prefer to have some privacy including with their F.H.

The advent of KeepSafe (which is really the not-very-popular FriendsUnited2 tarted up) and Phil Moire's puff for it in the photo competitions just shows the widening gulf in the direction of GRU and what most members want.

tant pis

ps: Given that GRU cannot reliably serve up tree access and content (the cousins issue is still outstanding) why would you trust them with yr photos which could suddenly burst out all over FB in a moment or disappear altogether? Just as easy and a lot safer to keep them on DropBox and allow access to just those you wish and a link in the notes of GRU.

ps2: If you want an electronic scrap book for yr FH and other stuff Microsoft "OneNote" is very good indeed - it can be found on eBay in the XP/2003 version for about £ 15.

The cousin issue is not outstanding.

Having looked at the Facebook page - I feel that the GR 'Team' could spend their time more usefully in getting this site to work properly for those who need it for their trees.

The Facebook site is filled with inane 'did you know' and 'what did you' type postings.

And some of the requests for help are in the main looking for living relatives which is as we all know a minefield......

GET THIS SITE WORKING PROPERLY..... :-S

Never have & never will use Facebook.
Likewise Keepsafe.
Would prefer that the site I pay membership for should work for it´s members at all levels of membership

I won't be putting any of my family photographs on Keepsafe.

I don't enter GR competitions, seems to me the winners live in the UK (correct me if that's wrong).

GR+Keepsafe ~ an oxymoron!

I have Facebook, but use an alias! I only use it to see pics of friends & rellies, when they email me, telling me to look.

Sometimes I look at GR Facebook..... not much there to interest me.

Ho Hum.

So many things GR are working on...........

Every time I send a message to "the team" the response is "we're working on it".

I'd rather see the BASIC system work properly, instead of these "fancy doodahs" that most of us don't want or need.

I DO use Keepsafe and find the folders useful for finding things at a glance.

However, I prefer to keep the privacy level and NOT to have them shared with Joe Public.

I will only share as and when I wish to and with whom I wish.

I am an avid Face Book user but I do not post pictures to keep other users 'happy'.

Meanwhile:

The Search photos facility is a reasonable idea, as there are people on my tree whom I have never seen and would dearly love to see if anyone has a picture of them.

Unfortunately, members aren't labellng their photos in a helpful manner and the computer is picking up 'near misses' eg..

I am looking for possible photos of an Olive Martin.

I get.....

'Shirley Oliver (nee Martin) with baby'

'Martin and Oliver'

'Olive and Martin on there wedding day'

'Elizabeth Martin at her 80th birthday'

Not at all helpful.

I also have Dropbox but tend to forget about it.

Cynthia,

I recently suggested the Search photos should search on the 'Attached relations' field and not on the title or description fields which, as you point out, are filled out in a rather random fashion.

I've recently come across an old photo album with pics of named people (not my rellies) from the 1890s and was thinking of adding them to my Keepsafe with 'Public Access' so other members could see the pictures in case they recognised any of their rellies. Of course, my suggestion of searching on 'Attached rellies' wouldn't work for these pictures so I'm not sure of the best way to make them available.

Simon,

I like the idea of searching by "attached relatives" and this is certainly for consideration.

With regard to unidentified people in photos, I have created a new tag "Unidentified Person". If you add this tag to those photos, and then follow this link, it will show all public unidentified persons. If you need help with "tagging" I will be posting a blog in the next day or so about this.

Hope this helps. And if you need more guidance please feel free to send me a note.

Now we know why Phil Moir wears sunglasses ~

He's got two black eyes! :-0

What does the other guy look like?

Simon

Simon Report 30 Oct 2012 13:57

Thanks Phil. I'm glad you like the idea of searching on the Attached Relations field.

As to the "Unidentified Person" tag, it's not so much that my people are 'unidentified' but that they are not my rellies. I do have names for them - but they don't belong in my tree.
