Uploaded GEDCOM has 400+ Extra Unknown Names

The GEDCOM is not a precise tool. It is not owned by any genealogical website.

It was designed and is owned by The Church of Latter Day Saints (The Mormons) and was created by them for their own use, however, it was later found to be quite handy for copying trees onto other sites.

So I do not think there is a great deal Genes, Ancestry and all of the others can do when a problem occurs. They may be able to take your tree back to the point prior to adding the GEDCOM. Not too sure. ;-)

Hi Shelley,
Yes....But it hasn't really fixed the problem!
I sent my GEDCOM to Customer Services who have manually removed the Unknown names but my Tree on here is now about 100 names LESS than what it should be!
I'm unable to upload my GEDCOM without it showing an extra 330 or so names and I'm unable to manually delete the "Unknown" names myself like I was able to up to about a year ago.
So to cut a long story short.....
I'm unable to put an accurate Family Tree up on GenesReunited anymore and am concentrating on using ancestry.co.uk as my main Family Tree and certainly no point in re-newing my GR membership in May as nobody seems to want to "fix" the problem properly! :-(

Hi Pete,

Have you received a reply from Support?

My understanding is that it happens because the GR tree does not currently support multiple relationships, for example where cousins marry.

So, when you import a tree by way of a gedcom, rather than reject it altogether, it creates "dummy" entries for all the names that are in one way or another connected to other names by more than one route.

In practice it is no big deal and no need for concern.

FYI
I did a test for this two weeks ago and the results were:-

FTM (My definitive tree data) 14,234
GR after Ged import 14,701

Thanks..I did contact "support" but have not received a reply!
I know I haven't got 338 duplicate entries on my tree....
I do remember be
fore the software was upgraded I could remove "unknown" names manually but can't seem to be able to do it now!?!

On another thread someone suggested that it was caused where the same person appears twice on your tree. The GEDCOM loader could be making duplicate entries for such people.

If that is the case then it might be possible to correct duplicated branches manually.

It is probably best to contact support.

Hi,

When I upload my GEDCOM to ancestry.co.uk it shows as 8440 names (which is correct)
When I upload it to Genes Reunited it shows as 8778 names!
338 "Unknown" names seem to have appeared?
How do you remove them and why are they there in the first place?

Regards,

Pete
