Very poor coverage of Irelans/N Ireland

My brother, photo taken in September 1991 just a couple of weeks before he died. ............................................................ To help us and to get better results, please post as much detail as you can, especially name, date(s) and place. Also say what you already know.

For Scottish Records you need to go to "Scotland's People"
For Irish records you can try Roots Ireland ie. for nearly all Ireland or Ulster Historical Foundation for Counties Antrim & down.
Online records for Ireland are usually only up to 1920 at the most but mainly only up to 1900.
If you can find a Family History Centre near you run by the Church of Latter Day Saints Mormans) you can look up the indexes for yourself up to 1955.

there is NO general genealogy site that offers good coverage of Scottish and Irish genealogy ......... despite what the advertising says.



Scotland's People is the site for Scottish genealogy ........... that is a subscription site



Irish genealogy is difficult not only because of the fact that there were no censuses before 1901 but because so many records were destroyed at various stages in the history.



Google, and you may find some sites ................... or go to Genealogy Chat and look at the Irish Research threads where some people are offering help ................. most of those threads are stickied at the top of the Board

Hi jimbo

Firstly you've posted on the wrong board ( try Geneaologyy Chat) as this is for making suggestions TO Genes, and this is probably why you've had to wait for a reply.

Secondly - you are right - you're not looking in the right place. for Scottish Ancestors you need to look at Scotlands People. You can download certificates for a lot less than we can get in England. Ireland is different. There are no Irish census before 1901. Records are beginning to be made available, try looking at FamilySearch.org, it's free. Also try rootsireland.ie.

Lastly there are some Irish research threads on Genealogy Chat.

Sorry people (Genes R) but I find it extremely difficult to get information of Irish and even Scottish ancestors do you have a problem covering these locations? Just got your news sheet about tracing marriages so tried my own marriage in Scotland (1966) then the marriages of my parents (1937) and grandparents as a test case but got 'no results' in all of them. Have had to resort to using Ancestry - they are only a bit better.
Am I not looking in the right place? :-(
