mac Report 1 Oct 2010 20:03

Hi all,

I've been trying to track down the wife of William Bayliffe (aka Bayliff, Bailiffe, Bailiff), and have run out of options.

William appeared on the 1841 census at Couplands Yard, Cartmel, Ulverston Union, as Bailiff, with his wife Mary and children William (8), Thomas (5), James (2) and Ann (6 mths).

Mary was a widow on the 1851 census with 3 more children, Agnes (7), Margaret (3) and Betsey (9 mths).

I've tracked Mary through the subsequent census returns up to her death in 1880, but can't find a marriage for her and William so can't get to her maiden name.

On the various census returns she was recorded as born Newland, Ulverston and Mansriggs (all 3 in the same area of Lancashire).

So if anyone can help with her origins I would be very grateful.

Many thanks
Mac

Wouldn't a child's birth cert give her maiden name ?

Ann, you've got the right family in 1881, Agnes is Williams daughter (my gg grandmother), married to James Henderson. And Anne Marie has the right family in 1851.

Does the child's birth certificate give a mothers maiden name? I thought it only recorded the father?
Thanks
Mac

Somewhere, from someones family tree, Mary may be called Butterfield, but I can't support this from any evidence. Mary Butterfield was christened St Marys, Ulverston 19/5/1808.

Can anyone find the connection to William Bailiff please?

birth certificates give the mother's maiden name

that's how we prove who is the mother of a child

A certificate costs £9.25 from GRO ..... and is the only sure way to prove mmn

I'll order the birth certificate for Agnes, can't believe I overlooked the obvious solution, must be my age. I've been totally bogged down in parish registers and never even thought of it.

Many thanks
