Patricia ... nobody is going to serve up your George Dwight on a plate. I can't believe that's all you've said about all the information posted here. Maybe you can imagine how much time I spent amassing it ... (your post had been unanswered for hours and would have gone unanswered if I hadn't decided to get stuck into it).

You have no further information ... and I set about *finding* information. That's how one gets information. One looks for it.

There seem to be four possible George Dwights. You now have information about their service units, ranks, states of origin/residence -- many thanks to Jonesey and Ginny for following up on what I found.

So what you need to do is investigate what elements of the US military were in Honiton at the time in question. You could do this via internet searches, or maybe consult the local library for help.

I would start by printing out all this info and absorbing it all and sorting it, so you have a picture of each George Dwight -- date of birth, places of residence, enlistment info, death info, farmily members, etc. Maybe make a little chart and enter the info for each one on it.

You're not looking for a Jim Smith, at least, you're looking for a person who can only be one of three or four. Once you've sorted them out, investigate the possible Honiton connections. And then consider what contact info is available for the family of whichever one(s) seems to be a candidate.

I don't know what you are wanting to do if you can identify your George Dwight, but I've assumed you want to contact family. You can come back to this thread anytime, once you've done further research into possible Honiton connections, or if you want help with that, and if we can find any more family contact info we'd send it to you privately then.

If you do a google search for

"george manny dwight"

you'll find a bit more info (Texas) that could be useful if that person proved to be your man, along with bits of info about other George Dwight-s who are of about the right age, e.g. in Colorado.

Aha, and making the search

"george manny" dwight

gets this:

http://files.usgwarchives.net/ca/sandiego/cemeteries/sdnational-d8.txt

Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. Point Loma, San Diego County, CA
Extracted from the Department of Veterans Affairs, National Cemetery
Administration database dated 15 June 2006 by Joy Fisher.
This file is part of the California Tombstone Project
http://www.usgwtombstones.org/california/californ.html

DWIGHT GEORGE MANNY 11/11/1919 02/25/2001 US AIR FORCE
and from the other info, I believe his wife:
DWIGHT RAYNE C 01/28/1926 12/13/2004 US ARMY

This might help rule that particular GD in or out of your search.

And searching for "George W Dwight", we find the Colorado GD:

http://www.chieftain.com/obituaries/article_7b18b948-d351-11df-9f17-001cc4c002e0.html

"George W. Dwight, 92, died in Loveland, Colo., Oct. 5, 2010. Born Feb. 3, 1918, in Elkhart, Kan., to Norman and Myrtle Jane Dwight. A proud 10th-generation descendant of John Dwight of Dedham, England and Dedham, Mass., who came to America in 1634 with his family and brother's family. ... During WWII, he served in the Army Air Corps as an aircraft mechanic crew chief."

There is a lot of family info there. - edit - Oh my goodness, on reading that over, I see how recent it was, and what a shame it might be if he is your George.

And searching for

"george h dwight" wwii

a coincidental result that could be interesting, although less obviously connected than the other two:

http://www.meserve.org/obituari.htm

The Patriot Ledger -- Quincy, Massachusetts dated March 07, 1995
"She is survived by her husband, George H. Dwight Jr.; ..." -- she was born 1948/9, so her husband could easily have been the son of a WWII service man. Hm, the father could be the one who died in 1979, and is in the military cemetery, as I posted earlier.

I have put out a call for someone with worldwide Ancestry access to check out the WWII enlistment records, so hopefully when I wake up and make it to the keyboard on Sunday, we'll have some more info.

Btw, there are a gazillion GR members with John Dedham born 1600-1605 (and also 1627 and 1632) in Dedham, Essex, England and Dedham, Norfolk, Massachusetts, variously, in their trees (USAmericans tend to get rather muddled and careless about these things, I've noticed).

This is Ancestry's database of

U.S. World War II Army Enlistment Records, 1938-1946
http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=8939

I don't subscribe for access, but on a free search, there are three George Dwights in the database:

George M Dwight California California
George W Dwight Colorado Colorado
George M Dwight Jr Iowa Missouri

Someone with full Ancestry access could view the details.

Does the record/word of mouth info you have give any indication of his middle name, place of origin, age, service unit, rank ... ?

This is Ancestry's database of

U.S. Veterans Gravesites, ca.1775-2006
http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=8750

and the search results for the name are:

George Manny Dwight 2001 CA
George H Dwight 1979 TX
George W Dwight 1980 NY
George Manny Jr Dwight 2001 TX

One extra, with the full middle name for two -- you can probably rule out the father - if they are father and son. And the George H who died in 1979 was quite possibly a WWI vet.

There is a George Manny Dwight, who would be the Sr, who was also in WWI, in the database

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=6482

George Manny Dwight Des Moines, Iowa

So that likely places him out of the age range.

This is Ancestry's database of

1930 United States Federal Census
http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=6224

and for corresponding George Dwights it has

George Dwight city, Los Angeles, California abt 1909
George W Dwight [parents' names] city, Baca, Colorado abt 1918

none in Missouri, none in Texas, and various others around the country. There are 3 Georges with father George:

George 1922, father George H, Monmouth NJ
George 1928, father George, Monmouth NJ
George M 1920, father George W, Des Moines Iowa
(and mistranscriptions are possible, e.g. W for M)

You seem to have a fairly small field to work with.

The enlistment records seem to be quite detailed and might give enough info to determine which one would have been in Devon in 1944, since it should be possible to determine whether the unit in question was stationed there.

If you edit your subject line to make it informative -- e.g.

George Dwight, US census/WWII enlistment

someone with the necessary subscription is more likely to see it and do the lookups for the records I've indicated above and anything else that might be found. If that hasn't happened in a day or so, I'll fetch someone to look up the details for you. ;)
