George was born in Dorset in 1852 he was married in 1870 in the 1871 his wife Mary is living with her parents in Portland. I believe that George was a soldier based in Portland. In 1875 Mary remarries and is listed as a Widow, But what happened to George??? I have been told that to look at the Army Files of Soldiers killed in Action I would have to go to the National Archives this is difficultas I live in Australia. Can anybody help is this So, and is there an alternative method of getting this info.

You say " I believe that George was a soldier based in Portland"

What is his occupation on his marriage cert. and his daughter's birth cert?

So how do we know George was born in 1852 in Dorset? ;)

If that's a guess, on either count, it isn't wise to offer it as fact.

If he was a soldier, he could have been born anywhere.

Here's a possibility:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/igi/search_igi.asp

GEORGE THOMAS STONE
Birth: 03 FEB 1851
Christening: 02 MAR 1851 Isleworth, London, England
Father: ROBERT STONE
Mother: EMMA
Batch No.: C042261

although he may likely be the one who married Mary Jane Ludlow, 1874, Shoreditch.

Presumably their daughter's birth, for info:

Births Jun 1870
Stone Mary Weymouth 5a 337

I apologise for the lack of some information but what information I gave was fact, George Thomas Stone was born at Gillingham Dorset in 1852 He was married to Mary Bennett Pearce in 1870 His occupation as a Soldier was noted on his daughter's wedding certificate and also stated that he was dead. On his wife's 2nd Marriage certificate in 1875 she is noted as a Widow.

So Rex, can you tell us what record you have of George's birth??

(There are three births for George Stone in Dorset in 1852; none of a George Thomas Stone. Have you matched one of those births to your George, e.g. by father's name/occupation on the birth and marriage certificates?)

What age is stated on his marriage certificate, and father's name/occupation?

If your only option for searching military records turns out to be to retain a professional military genealogy researcher and you want to pursue that, I can recommend a good one if you send me a private message.

Marriages Mar 1870

I am certain of my records my missing information was where did he die ? And I have received information in the last few hours from elsewhere that appears to place his death in Germany, this still has to be confirmed.

Well, I'm glad you are certain of your records.

The thing for many of the rest of us is that unless we are certain of the accuracy of the information given, we kind of lose interest. We've seen too many instances where information was inaccurate. And when someone has information, it just isn't that difficult to provide it. Of course, when someone has access to information (the information re a death in Germany?), many of us expect it will have been accessed before posting a request for someone else to help find it.

You're ever so welcome, goodbye and good luck!

But hey, here's a turn-up for the books.

"George Thomas Stone was born at Gillingham Dorset in 1852"

1861

Name: George Stone
Age: 9
Estimated birth year: abt 1852
Relation: Son
Father's Name: Silas
Mother's Name: Grace
>>>>> Where born: Uphusband, Hampshire, England

Civil parish: Gillingham
Ecclesiastical parish: Gillingham
County/Island: Dorset
Registration district: Shaftesbury

Charles Stone 6
Frank Stone 4
Sarah E Stone 4
Emily A Stone 1

Marriages Dec 1839
STONE Silas Shaftesbury 8 139
TOOGOOD Grace Shaftesbury 8 139

Uphusband is a village in Andover registration district.

Births Sep 1852 ??
Stone George Andover 2c 156

Now, how certain of those records were you, again?

Of course, that census (the only one he appears in) could be wrong. His three youngest siblings and two of his older siblings are shown as born in Gillingham. He and one older and one younger sibling are shown as born in Uphusband.

But, well, here they are in 1851 ...

Silas Stone 31
Grace Stone 28
Mary Ann Stone 10
Jane Stone 9
Caroline Stone 4
Elizabeth Ellen Stone 2
Thomas Stone 1

Civil parish: Abbotts Ann

Not sure about the Sep 1852 birth.

That George appears to be a twin who later died:

Welp, maybe he was born in Gillingham reg dist, even though his parents appear to have been living in Andover reg dist shortly before his birth, and he and his closest siblings show as born there on the subsequent census ...

Births Sep 1848 ?
STONE Elizabeth Ellen Andover 7 38

Another possibility:

Births Dec 1850
Stone George Andover 7 48

Interestingly, the two youngest children in the 1861 household, Frank and Sarah, are twins.

Whatever, like I said, w/o the info, the interest wanes.

Yes, the question relates to the death. But I kind of like to establish things like the name and age before hunting for a death. ;)

Btw, I did spend time hunting at FIBIS for a possible death in India, somwhere a British soldier might have been at the time, but to no avail, which is why I didn't mention it.
