Also in 1851, Joshua's brother, Joseph Kemp, had to go to court at Norwich because he was a witness in a murder trial. He had to testify against Henry Groom, a resident of Wells Next the Sea, Norfolk, who had shot to death one John Ayton, the superintendent of the Brick and Tile Works at Burnham Overy. Joseph, amongst many others, had seen Henry Groom behaving in a furtive manner prior to the murder. This happened in the summer of 1851. In April of 1851, Joseph had lost his wife, Charlotte, to consumption. What a year Joseph! By the way, Henry Groom was found guilty and was hung at Norwich Castle. Henry Groom's death mask can be seen at Norwich castle.

In 1851 a new superintendent called John Ayton was appointed at the brickyard at nearby Peterstone. His first move was to dismiss labourer Henry Groom for bad work. Groom bore a grudge against Mr Ayton and killed him with a single shot at the sandpit.

Hello, I'm new to this site but cannot seem to find any information past my great great grandfather William Groom. He married Elizabeth Utting but I cant seem to get any further, does anyone have any info or suggestions? Also way back in the tree somewhere is a Henry Groom, he was born around 1809 and was hanged in 1951 or 1952 for murder, any extra info would be great! thanks! Melissa x
