My Grandmother was Mary E Hann,born1880in Shropshire.Her father was Alfred Hann born 1852 in Shropshire,he married Jane Millington in 1879.Here the trail goes cold can anyone get me started again.

I have tried to find Alfred and Samule on other censuses ....... but there are many of them, and no one says born in Birkenhead Cheshire on any other census!


I think they might have been born in Devon or Dorset .... if only because I have found Hann families in those counties with brothers Alfred and Samuel!


I suggest you get Alfred and Jane's marriage certificate, if you do not already have it, as this will tell you the name of the two fathers, and this may give us a lead.

As I said, it is difficult to find Alfred further back ................ my gut feeling is that somehow he gave the wrong birth place on that 1881 census! He may have been asked "Where do you come from?", and gave the name of the last place he had lived as against his birth place!! I have seen that happen with other people.


I think you will have to get the marriage certificate and so get his father's name ...... and hope he tells the truth on there!!


The certificate will probably take about 2 weeks to get to you. They usually take 10 to 15 days to get to me in Canada.

How to find the information quickly


Use the wild card symbol * as much as possible

alf* han*

use county only, not town

remove county (in case born in different one!)

use birth year +/- 5 years

use the most unusual name .... I started off with mary han*, which isn't really unusual but the birth year and place were more certain than her parents.

try surname only (sometimes the census takers use only initials, or make such a mess up of the spelling of the first name!!)

try first name only, and then search the pages to see if there is a mistranscribed surname that could possibly be yours.


In your case, the problem was looking for Alfred Hann born in Shropshire!
