Thanks for the information about Ambrose, that's him the marriage certificate had him down as a farmer and as deceased at the time of the marriage.

Jack

Jack Report 25 Jun 2010 08:28

I'm not sure that Joachim is him, that would make him younger than his son which isn't right.

HI

who are the witnesses to the marriage of John and florence, may give a clue...

have not had any luck in finding John or Joachim in any census. It is likely that they were not born in the UK, perhaps Germany/Austria etc
I would consider the possibility that John was a POW in WW1 and stayed on afterwards???? A scenario could be that he was sent to work on a farm (ie the Witt farm) during the war and that was how he met Florence. Obviously this is just speculation.
John may also have anglisized his name , maybe he was Johannes originally

The witnesses from what I can decipher are Marie Marx, H.E.Witt, Kathlea Barrett, Margaret Elwick.

Registrars Frank Stokes and Henry S Vudman.

I've been trying to decipher the second profession for John Scholtz and it looks like it says Trivale 4th Pionarbatt AJH.

Jack ...at a guess 'trivale' might be 'Private 4th (something Batt(battalion)??

If you want and could scan it into pc to email I will have a look? send me a PM if you want to try that.

Jack

Jack Report 27 Jun 2010 17:52

Yeah I think you are right about the private part, looking at it. Will PM you in a sec.

A Pionierbattalion is the German equivalent of an Engineer / Sappers battalion.

I really can't think what AJH might be though.

The names Scholz / Schulz / Schultz are very common in Germany & there are very many people with those surnames in the company where I work in Frankfurt.
