Cof E I would guess as there is also a reference to catholic church - from lancs-opc :http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Clitheroe/index.html

The Parish Church of St. Mary Magdalene occupies an elevated position, and commands extensive and varied views. The ancient edifice is known to have been in existence in 1135; but the present building only dates from 1828-9, the cost of its erection being £8,500; and the upper part of the spire was added in 1844.

Considerable repairs and improvements were made in 1854.

This site only has baptisms from 1828, so can't check if any of Thomas and Fanny's children were baptised there.

If you are thinking of visiting Clitheroe, make sure you go to Cowmans butchers - about 100 different types of sausages!

History
A very warm welcome to you all.

Situated some 35 miles (56km) north of Manchester in the Ribble Valley, in the Diocese of Blackburn, the church is built on a limestone outcrop in the centre of the town of Clitheroe, within a peaceful church garden enjoying panoramic views across the valley, flanked to the north by Dunsop Fell through which the Trough of Bowland runs.

The main services are supported by a full choir, accompanied by a particularly fine organ, the latter stimulating an active concert programme throughout the year.Visitors and newcomers are assured of a warm and friendly welcome at all our services.

A peal of eight bells and an unusual east window depicting 1000 years of local history, reminds us of the long connection between the church and the community.

For information not found on this site, please call the Parish Office, Tel: 01200 422 828.

The Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene
Clitheroe is a town of two hills - on one, perched on a rocky outcrop, is the Norman keep of Clitheroe Castle, and on the other the parish church of St Mary Magdalene.

There has been a church on this site since at least 1122, when the building was granted to the Priory of St John in Pontefract. In 1283 the church passed into the possession of Stanlaw Abbey and became one of the chapels of Whalley Church.

The chancel arch of this Norman building was taken down as recently as 1828, but nothing now remains of it. The oldest of what we see today dates from the early C15 rebuilding. In 1828-9 and later there was further and substantial rebuilding that has given the church its present character. The east window, containing the arms of many local families includes old glass and the roughly made churchwarden's bench has a curious poor box made out of oak.

One of the most rare possessions of the Church is a brass, engraved with the horoscope of Dr. John Webster, famous in the local witch-hunt days.
