Daisy Maud Ingerfield b.1896 Street, Somerset

Marian Report 21 Oct 2008 01:29

Daisy is shown on the 1901 Census Record as being a granddaughter of George Broughton but I am puzzled as to her parentage.

I can find no Broughton/Ingerfield marriages and am hoping someone may be able to help me.

Although living in Street, Somerset, there are also family connections in Reading, Berkshire.

Daughter Emily looks a prime candidate to be the right age to have a child by 1901!

You know ................. you might be on to something Ozi!

Anne Broguhton in 1891 is pretty young to have a 16 year old daughter.

I wonder if George was married before, Emily is the daughter of the first wife, and Anne a second wife?

If her name was Howe, and Kate is her daughter ...............

Thanks Sylvia and Ozi for your help so far.

Yes, George was previously married to Eliza Payne, the mother of both Alfred and Emily, but she died in 1879.

In 1881 George and his brother Samuel were lodging in Berkshire but George was described as 'Unmarried' - not a Widower!

Emily was with her maternal grandparents, the Payne family, but was described as a 'lodger'! I also thought she was a likely candidate to be Daisy's mother but in the 1901 Census she was living with her paternal grandparents and still unmarried.

Alfred puzzles me. I cannot find him in the 1881 Census now but thought I once spotted him in an orphanage in Lincoln (George's birthplace). I cannot find him in the 1901 Census either.

I did wonder .........did Alfred change his name to Ingerfield? If so, why?

Daisy's birthdate would fit in with Alfred and Kate's marriage but I ruled out the possibility of Kate being another daughter of George and Eliza when I found her birth record as Kate Julia Howe in 1876.

I know Daisy's birth certificate would give me the answers but I wanted to exhaust all other avenues first. Daisy is not in my direct line but I hate leaving loose ends. George was a nephew of my Great Grandmother, Susannah Broughton.

I'll keep digging for a while just to see if anything else turns up.

Many thanks once again and good luck
