Find Ancestors

Hi everyone.

I have just received marriage cert for my great grandfather (Benjamin Henry Hughes age 25) and great grandmother (Mary Walsh age 23) and have found out that she was a widow before they married in 1897 Darlaston, Staffs.

Her original surname appears to be WALFORD, and her father's name Joseph.

Mary was born about 1874, - I have found a ref to a birth in ~June 1874 in Bromsgrove, but I can find no trace of her on the 1881 or 1891 census with a father called Joseph - in fact I can't find Joseph at all!

Can anyone shed any light please?

Thanks Ann. May be a connection - but the marriage cert definitely shows Joseph as her father, and if she was born 1874 ish, I'm guessing he was around 1854ish - but I still can't find him!

K - Thank you - I've just had a quick look, and this seems fairly certain to be my Benjamin Henry - it's the Quarry Bank connection that clinches it for me!

Now I know where to look for Mary.

There is this birth on the IGI, although slightly too old, in the right area - Sadly she died aged one

Do you have the birth cert of your ancestor who was their child? What is Mary's maiden name on that?

Potty -

On my gran's birth cert it says father's name Benjamin Henry Hughes, mother Mary Hughes formerly Walsh.

I sent for their marriage cert, and that' s when I found the surname of Walford - the marriage cert says Mary Walsh - widow - father's name and occupation Joseph Walford - Labourer.

I'm now wondering if the little Mary Walford is perhaps an older sibling, and they re-used the name? I know that sometimes happened in families. I'll keep looking, and thanks for all the help, everyone.
