Mrs Dorothy Joyce Report 27 Nov 2010 10:54

Hi This is the one causing all the trouble. Thank you all for trying to help.I do have the passenger list for when Dad went to Canada, but it is very difficult to read. Travelling with him was William a scholar from Erith
Herbert scholar from Kenilworth
My dad, Engineer by trade but down for farm working he was from Bournemouth.
The ship arrived at Port St John New Brunswick 3rd March 1929 after leaving Liverpool in February.
I have put a picture on my Tree site and Janey has access to it, she may know how to get the picture transfered so you can see it.
Yours Joyce

I'll bring this back to Joyce's attention (I hate PMs!!).

Someone here at GR has a John Hickling born 1937 in Ontario, Canada, in their tree. Her England connection is Violet Hickling 1901 Notts.

The surname is mainly a Nottinghamshire one. There were Ernests born 1904, 1905, 1906 and 1907 in Notts. Someone has the 1907 one in a tree here at GR.

Three people have a Leslie Robertson born 1913 in their trees, two stating unknown place of birth, one England.

Probably Eric H Cunliffe born 1910 in Warrington. Seems to have married 1945 in Southport.

Just messing around a bit, trying to see whether any of the others stayed in Canada and/or might have family on this site, talk about yer long shots. ;)

... Looking for births/deaths for any of them in England, the names just aren't uncommon enough, unfortunately.

Ta, jax!

I don't quite follow this:

"Looks like he was travelling with four other young men
Reginald. Leslie, William and Eric"

Surnames?

Possibly, from Joyce's list:

Eric Cuncliffe [16] - Leicester (c1912)
William ? [16] - Erith (c1912)

Yes, travelling with Mole, 1929:

CUNLIFFE Eric 1911 M 1929 Liverpool Canada Saint John NB

But the others?

edit -- I also get (travelling with Mole):

HUDSON Frederick 1913 M 1929 Liverpool Canada Saint John NB
DAVISON Francis 1904 M 1929 Liverpool Canada Saint John NB
HAYWARD Arthur 1914 M 1929 Liverpool Canada Saint John NB
HICKLING Ernest 1906 M 1929 Liverpool Canada Saint John NB

... adding Jax's others from post below:

TUCKER Reginald 1908 M 1929 Liverpool Canada Saint John NB
MCKEE William 1913 M 1929 Liverpool Canada Saint John NB
ROBERTSON Leslie 1913 M 1929 Liverpool Canada Saint John NB

I'm still trying to help Joyce out with this a bit. We're looking into her getting an article done, with the pictures, in the free community newspaper for that area in Ontario.

Should have done this before, don't know why I didn't.

At FMP:

MOLE Ernest 1912 M 1929 Liverpool Canada Saint John NB

Can someone with access give us a list of the people accompanying him? And whatever it might say about him / the group -- intended destination, occupation ...?

I'm assuming they are travelling as a group. They would look something like the list I put above:

Eric Cuncliffe [16] - Leicester (c1912)
Francis Davison [25] - Halifax (c1903)
Arthur Hayward [15] - Broadstairs (c1913)
Ernest Hickling [23] - Nottingham (c1905)
Frederick Huison? [16] - Derby (c1912)
William ? [16] - Erith (c1912)
Herbert ? [15] - Kenilworth

Thanks!

Janey So glad you replied. I just don't know what my dad did , just that he brought those postcards back. He was supposed to have gone to a farm somewhere, but us kids were not allowed to talk about it. I admit mum and dad were not married til he came home. Dad was 17, I wonder if there is a list of occupants living in the village like a census or similar. Trouble is he was only there for a year if that. I know last year I found a reference to him in a newspaper, but I don't remember how I found it. He called himself Ernest not William. At least the club still exists I suppose. I think I put the pictures on my family tree, I shall have to check, it's such a long time ago, as I have not been adding to it lately. I think this is a bit long so I will sign off now, Joce

Hi Dorothy. I'm afraid that I was pretty confused back last fall about what the questions were here. Just didn't know what you were wanting to find out.

Unfortunately I'm not going to do any better today ... I've had the flu bad for several days and the brain just is not functioning at all.

Was I supposed to be looking for info about your father while he was in Canada? I think the problem is that any records for the time he was here are not accessible because of privacy legislation.

Glad to hear you're making the big trip. I'm sorry that I'm still just so &%$# sick right now that I'm completely useless. I'll check in again tomorrow.

Maybe if you explain what you're looking to find out, someone else will be able to help.

edit - Dorothy, I just realized that in your other thread you said:

"I don't know if this is any use, but he brought some picture postcards back with him. Hewetts Cottage Seeleys Bay and Contrary Club Seeleys Bay. There are others all presumably from the same village."

Seeley's Bay is in Ontario, near Kingston, just north of the St Lawrence River. So it's kind of confusing, whether he was actually living in Manitoba or in Ontario.

I found one reference to the Contrary Club on the internet -- an obituary of a man who died in January 2010 in a place called Lebanon, Pennsylvania, who was a member of the Contrary Club of Seeley's Bay, Ontario. (Maybe he had a vacation home there or some such.)

I can confirm the list, was on the photocopy I received from McLeod Neysa
3 March 2008, Library and Archives Canada.
My father was William Ernest Mole but gave his name as Ernest for some reason. born in Bournemouth.
I will put copy of photo on Genes on his record there was no info on the photo except when it was taken.

Two people have this person in their trees here at GR:

Francis 1903 HALIFAX West Yorkshire England
Francis 1903 Halifax

I don't see any of the others in trees here.

A Frederick Hudson was born in Derby in 1911. The name Huison is quite uncommon and seems to be concentrated in the Leeds area.

JaneyCanuck Report 2 Oct 2009 17:54

Dorothy, can you confirm that the list goes like this? --

Eric Cuncliffe [16] - Leicester (c1912)
Francis Davison [25] - Halifax (c1903)
Arthur Hayward [15] - Broadstairs (c1913)
Ernest Hickling [23] - Nottingham (c1905)
Frederick Huison? [16] - Derby (c1912)
William ? [16] - Erith (c1912)
Herbert ? [15] - Kenilworth

I've calculated birthdates allowing for the fact that the voyage was in February so most of them probably hadn't had their birthday yet that year.

If you can't decipher the last two surnames, some of us would be happy to take a look at a scan of the list (on the back of the photo?) and take a shot at it; we could give you email addresses by private message here.

My dad went to Canada 1929 on SS Montclare, and stayed at B.I.C.A. Hostel before going on to a farm somewhere. There were others in the same group. I have a photo of them while they were waiting to leave Liverpool for St. John in Canada. Does any one else have family who went on this trip.? J.C.

aaaargh, Dorothy, you started a new thread instead of adding to the one you already had.

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1180989

This is a mess now I'm afraid.

Perhaps this would be the best thread to continue in.

Here's what I posted in the other just now:

Hi Dorothy - to add a message to the thread, click on the purple Reply button at the top and the invisible box will open for a new post. That way everybody can see, and we don't have to toggle back and forth from inbox to thread.

You wrote:

I have put the list of companions who were on the same trip. Just wish I knew how to put a photo on the site, someone might recognise a member of their family. I am trying to find the farm he was billeted to.

Where have you put the list of companions? Do add it here, if you have it.

Unfortunately, this site is years out of date, technologically and in terms of services to users. There's no way to put a photo here. If you can put it somewhere else on the net, you can put the address of that site here for people to consult it.

One thing you can do is attach it to Ernest in your tree, and then allow anyone who recognizes a name to view your tree.

Also, search trees here for the names, with +/- 5 years for the birthdates maybe.

There was a project here a while back to find family members of people who died in the Bethnal Green Tube disaster in WWII. Starting with a list of names of people for whom there was no known family, a group of GR members found them in BMD records and identified spouses, children, etc., and then searched trees for relations. It was amazing how many of the deceased and/or their close family members were found in trees of members of this site!

For the farm in Canada -- are you here in Canada, or did your dad go home to England? (Ah, I see you in the births index, so he went home then.) Margaret and I are in Canada, so if you provide some details we might have some ideas about how to find it.
