Henry was born in 1833 and Mary about 1842 in London. Mary married John Francis Ross, who was in the Royal Navy and based in Australia and had a son Henry Ross. Henry was an Australian Merchant based in London and had a family but I cannot find details of his earlier life before 1861 census. He might have gone to Australia at one point. Their parents lived in London at one point but they also could have come from Australia. Henry and Mary might have had siblings but I do not know.

Mary's marriage cert. will give you her fathers name and profession which will help find them on census records.

No idea of parents names or where they came from but yes I do know who Henry married but not sure where. He married Helen Stack or Bramhill, first child born about 1865. She was Irish but worked for his family so suspect it would have been in London area.

If you're not sure of his wifes name, the birth cert. of their children will give you her maiden name.

Show Amelia's second name as Edith, so birth is not correct!
Also show married for 44yrs so that makes date 1866/67 which is the date of the marriage I found.
That would mean her maiden name was Godsell!

How do you know that if you don't know his parents names?

Thanks for all this info but still want to find the parents and also earlier info on Henry and his sister Mary. It states that they were born in London from the censuses but nothing can be found for either before 1861 for Henry. Only ones I found for 1851 were entries at schools where they were boarding but not certain these are the correct Henry and Mary. Nothing in 1841 census that I could find. Perhaps he went to Australia and that is how he got the link as a merchant.

The first thing to do is buy the marriage cert. of either Henry or Mary, to find out their father's name and occupation.
This will give you a better chance of finding them!

You don't answer my question about Helen's maiden name or how you know that she worked for his family!
If she did work for them then that should help find them in the census returns.

Do you mean the christening took place in May 1834?
I learnt about Helen Stack or Bramhill from my mother in law. However I cannot find any reference for Henry Grant in any of the censuses 1841, 1851 or 1861 that I can feel confident about. From 1871 they are all correct with family and servants.
