The worst of both worlds, eh.

Then there was the kefruffle in the capital a few years back about the effort to change the name of Pretoria Street/Bridge.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretoria_Bridge

"The bridge shares its name with Pretoria Avenue, of which it is a continuation. Pretoria Avenue, formerly Jane Street, was renamed in 1902 to commemorate the British victory in the Second Boer War and those Canadians that had served. The name comes from the captured Boer capital, Pretoria. The name later become controversial as most Canadians associated it with the apartheid regime in South Africa. In the late 1980s a movement was launched to rename the bridge after Nelson Mandela. This was opposed by others who felt it was an important monument to Canadians who had fought in South Africa. City council refused to get involved and the proposal eventually died."

Personally, I'm just not generally thrilled about renaming things for reasons of the moment. (Unless maybe it's for good reason. ;) We tried to name our new university student centre for the father of the professor whose firing had prompted the student strike action then underway ...)

And I don't think "most" Canadians associated the name with anything, actually. And anybody who did associate it with apartheid didn't know any history.

Now if it had actually been called Botha Bridge ...

Janey - yeah, well I blame it all on the Vancouver city fathers - there's streets named Blenheim, Trafalgar, Waterloo, Alma, Sevastapol, but then I think they'd named all the streets, and there was nothing left over for the Boer war (or WW1). It's only in the 1940s, when they developed some old industrial land on the edge of the city (right next to Boundary) do we get Mons & Vimy and a mess of WW2 names.

You've forgotten the Relief of Mafeking?? Tsk!

If he was regular army he wouldn't show in Kevin Asplin's IY lists.

But duh, there I go forgetting again.

I don't see a good match, but there are some "?" years of birth.

jax - thanks very much for your help. I'm encouraged to see William's an army pensioner - certainly looks like my guy.

JC - I'd forgotten abt the Boer War - I'll have to check that out.

mgnv, there's always the Anglo-Boer War, for 1901:

http://www.britishmedals.us/files/iys.htm

Storey, William 27104, Trooper 42nd Coy., 12th Bn. I.Y.

for example.

... although 42nd Coy., 12th Bn. seems to be Hertfordshire.

mgnv Report 20 Apr 2011 16:23

John Storey was a mystery witness at my g gran (Mary Ann Hesmondhalgh)'s 1873 marriage. John was born in Skelwith Bridge, just west of Ambleside. He gives Skelwithbridge/Skelwith as his pob in 1851/61/71 I now realize he was her bro-in-law, so now I'ld like some help on my grandad's cousins, please.

1881 Household:
Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability
John STOREY Head M Male 35 Ambleside, Westmorland, England General Labourer
Margaret STOREY Wife M Female 34 Ambleside, Westmorland, England

There were two more births in Ambleside before Margaret died.

Births Jun 1883
STOREY Grace [GC]reighton Kendal 10b 705

Births Sep 1884
Storey James Edmund Kendal 10b 719

Deaths Jun 1885
STOREY Margaret Elizabeth 39 Kendal 10b 471

I have found some marriages:

Marriages Sep 1894 (>99%)
Gill Thomas Henry Kendal 10b 1061
Storey Isabel Kendal 10b 1061

Marriages Sep 1900
Carter Lydia Leicester 7a 508
**Hart Kate Elizabeth Leicester 7a 508
Sewell George William Leicester 7a 508
**Storey John Leicester 7a 508

Marriages Mar 1905
Bradley Mary Agnes Kendal 10b 1069
STOREY Michael Kendal 10b 1069

BRIER Harriet Kendal 10b 1392
CLARK Jonas Kendal 10b 1392
**EARL Margaret Elizabeth Kendal 10b 1392
**STOREY James Edmund Kendal 10b 1392

I've not found the death of John, but by 1891 the family are scattered.
William is a private in Chatham barracks, but the other 5 are in Kendal RD. I've not found William in 1901, but the other 5 kids are again in Kendal RD, except Grace is in Wigton up near Carlisle.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I'ld like to see their details in 1911 (with ref info + addresses) - I think this is who I want:

pob=Ambleside
HOUSEHOLD STOREY WILLIAM M 1869 42 Kendal Westmorland
HOUSEHOLD GILL ISABEL F 1875 36 Kendal Westmorland
HOUSEHOLD STOREY JOHN M 1879 32 Leicester Leicestershire
HOUSEHOLD STOREY MICHAEL M 1881 30 Kendal Westmorland
HOUSEHOLD HARPER GRACE CREIGHTON F 1883 28 Carlisle Cumberland
HOUSEHOLD STOREY JAMES EDMUND M 1885 26 Kendal Westmorland

If anyone can find John's death, or William in 1901, or Grace's marr, that also would be appreciated.
