Find Ancestors

I'm trying to trace relatives of my Great Grandfather, John Cowling, born around 1865, who married Annie, and died in 1915. I am having difficulty locating him on Census information etc.
Any help gratefully received.

Do you have any clues as to the names, DOBs of his children, his occupation etc? There are several John Cowlings married to Annies on the census.

It probably is as I do know he died in 1915. He had three children, Joseph, Ida and Edith, 1898, 1900 and 1903.
I found him on the 1891 census but can't seem to find him before that, so can't track his parents etc. Can't find him on the births register either unless I'm going very wrong somewhere - I am quite new to this so it would surprise me :-)
