I think Mary Coffield was probably a busy girl !

There is a Charles McTaggart in Campbeltown in 1891 - a single servant. By 1901 it is maybe he who is married to a lass 16 years his junior - Margaret Muir or McConachy (married 1899 Reference Campbeltown 507/49 for both surnames)

If the 1939 register shows Rachel Hart as born 7 Dec 1915, as does the death registration then the Shoreditch birth registration can't be hers (Sept. 1915).

The Shoreditch birth reg.also shows Rachel E Coffield, not Rachael A, so would this Scottish registration be hers??

Abby loved my grandparents dearly but seemed to have uncovered some odd things. You have the reight people. Just grandads birth seems to have not been registeredcand unable to locate marriage. No one in the family seemed to know when his birth was. 1903 to 1908. Even my dad was never sure. The plot thickens. Xx thankyou for your help. It is much appreciated :-D

Chasing the family back to try and find Emma's husband's name to try to find births

This is the 1911 from FMP - looking at Emma's writing I wonder if Tomas Oen might be Thomas Owen?

Can I just ask- if you don't know the birth date for Thomas William Hart and don't have his birth certificate or marriage certificate, how certain are you that Emma Agnes Hart was his mother? Or that the 1911 census is of the same man that was with Rachel on the 1939 register?

Did the family have any contact with his Mum or siblings?

Mary

Mary Report 21 Apr 2017 19:29

Emma Amelia/Agnes Hart 1879 married Thomas James Smith in
Poplar.
Dec 25th 1902 dad George Hart a Carman
witnessed by
George Edward Hart and Sarah Smith.

1911 they had 3 children 1 died
Thomas George Smith M Qtr 1905 Stepney V1c P364 died April 1905
Alfred Thomas Hart 1906
Marie Alice 1909

So the only other daughter who could be Thomas 1903 mum could be Alice Matilda Hart born 1882.

I can't see a marriage for her but it is possible she was a servant on 1911 census record.

OK- made a breakthough:-

Greyghost posted the 1911 census of the family and suggested that Thomas/ Tomas was possibly listed as Tomas Owen (the writing makes it difficult to read).

Looking at the 1901 census for the family, there is a Thomas Stander boarding with them. As we know that Thomas wasn't a child from Emma's husband, I wondered if he was Thomas Stander's son.

Following the boarder, Thomas Stander- I noted his surname was actually STANDEN.

I then found Thomas's birth:

STANDEN, THOMAS OWEN (mother's maiden: RICKMAN )
GRO Reference: 1903 S Quarter in POPLAR Volume 01C Page 634

So it appears the Thomas was the son of Emma Hart (nee Rickman) and Thomas Standen.

:-)
