Information on someone who emigrated to Australia

David Report 25 Jan 2012 22:08

Dear Friends

I'm researching my Sutton ancestry and know that my great uncle emigrated to Australia in the early 1900's. Great uncle Percy or Glen as he was commonly known was married to Elsie Maud and had twin daughters by the names of Peta & Glendy. I know that Glen served in the Australian army during the Great War as I've found all of these records.

The last known place that Glen, Elsie, Peta & Glendy lived was Clotilde St Mount Lawley Western Australia but then the trail has gone cold. Its believed that Peta & Glendy are still alive.

Any help with ideas of how I can track down this information would be gratefully accepted.

Regards
David

Hello David, so as not to duplicate your research, could you give us Percy and Elsie Maud's years of birth and their parent's names?

This helps when searching the records.

Was the last record you have for them in Clotilde Street in 1963? (That's the last ER I can see for them both together).

Uncle Glen (Percy) was born at East Winch Norfolk UK in 1890, I have the baptism for him as being 1895 but some of his brothers and sisters were baptised in the same year too.

I have him in the 1891 census aged 8mths living at the Carpenters Arms in East Winch along with his parents Roland Tom & Sophy Glendie also his brother and sister. I have all of this census info right up to 1911 for this family but was missing him when he went off to Australia although have him on passenger lists for Australia.

I have Elsie Maud Goodchild in the 1901 census and was born in King's Lynn in 1892.

Thank you soooo much for this information. You are brilliant! The address that was given to me was from my cousin who lives in Australia but it was rather sketchy I'm afraid but the information you've found is fantastic!

Mr. and Mrs. P. G. Sutton. of Kenwick, 'wish to announce the engagement of their only daughter Phyllis Glendy (Peggy) to William Leslie,. youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Cucel. of Armadale.

Searching the surname Cucel (no State or initial) there are only 3 names listed on http://www.whitepages.com.au, all in Western Australia.

If the engagement is correct, it is possible that one may know of the 'happy couple'.

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 26 Jan 2012 00:40

Do have a look at the trove site.

Typing in Glendy Sutton also brought up 3 results for Percy 'Glendy' Sutton who was charged with trying to sell horse meat as beef in 1918. The search results are on the right of the page. :-D

Ah - so that engagement may not be relevant? Unless they didn't get around to marriage until after he was discharged??

Hmm...Myrtle was born c1913, and William 1917? If not husband and wife, then perhaps brother and sister?

Or a wild goose chase????

It is left in your capable hands :-)

David........just to add ......the 'West Australian State Library' on-line has an 'Ask a Librarian' service ...they will check electoral rolls (past & present) and any newspaper death notices (for family names). (dates would help).

.....dates of death for Percy Glen Sutton ...11/5/1970 (parents Rolond Glen/Sophia) and Elsie Maud Sutton ...20/1/1975. (note spelling of 'Rolond'!)

There is also a death of Rowland Thomas Sutton 11/5/1964 (age 50yrs) (parents Percy G/Elsie M). Buried at Karrakatta (Perth) Anglican section WD 0317 (grantee Percy Glen Sutton)

There is a marriage for a Roland TG Sutton to a Joyce E Lockyer 1946 ..... BUT seems she married again 1951 to Michael Hurley. (note spelling 'Roland')

Hopefully the newspaper death notice/s will reveal family names.

Just for your information - probably did not marry Glendy

Cucel-Howlett On April 28, 1945, at St. George's Cathedral, Perth, by the Very Rev Dean Moore, Myrtle Hazel, (ex.Sgt. AWAS), only daughter of Mr. P. Kernick and the late Mrs. Kernick, to William Leslie, youngest son of Mrs J.F. Cucel (Armadale)

It might help if David had an idea when Peta and Glendy were born....and to confirm their gender.

EDIT>>>>>> from the OP........twin **daughters** by the names of Peta & Glendy.
So that rules out the Peter Glendy Sutton marriage.

Shame the Sutton/Cucel engagement was a red herring...Cucel is an unusual name.........but great that it has been discounted. Lets hope that David comes back to the thread before giving his Australian contact incorrect information.

Hi Everyone

Just coming back to the thread and saw all the additional information that's been added, thank you all so much again.

I think that this below could have been my mother's brother's marriage

I wonder if this is Peta?

Sutton: Peter Glendy
District: Perth
Reg No: 2241
Sex: M
Year: 1960
Salvaire: Violet Lillian

WA..bdm

I'm going to have to ask mum if she can give me any more info relating to this and also if she knows anything about Peta & Glendy. Perhaps she might shed some light on this.

I am deeply indebted to each and everyone of you for all this wonderful help. I have quite a lovely profile on this family because of you all.

My sincere wishes
David
