Looking for any information regarding Edith's police service records.
She born in 1877 Worcestershire - married Patrick Leo Mahon in 1904 Surrey, England. Remarried a Capt. Sansom at some point. Died 1956 in England.
She was a Sergeant of Police in the 1940's in London or Luton, England.
Any help appreciated
Thanks Leonie

The Met didn't take women until 1919, by which time she'd have been 40ish- if she joined the met.
I'd have said it was very unusual for a woman to be in the police force as early as that. Where has your info some from? Maybe http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/Wwps.htm

Penny ......................
Leonie did say specifically "in the 1940s" .................. I wondered if she had been one of the wartime volunteer wardens. But she would still have been well over 60!
There are a couple of trees on ancestry with her ........ neither of them mention anything about any "police service"

Was your father the source of this story about Edith, as with your other post?
I ask because both relate to the same decade

Sylvia - thanks for all that. I'd better clarify. The information came from Mum and Dad in the 1940's during WWII, so she may not have been in the Police Service at that time, just that it was talked about at the time.
Penny - I find it interesting that you mention Wartime Volunteer Wardens - do you know how I can investigate this line of research further ? Any records online perhaps?
The 1940's is the only period I had contact with my father, as my parents separated at the time and I lost contact with him.
Edith remarried in 1919 to a Captain John Ernest Sansom, so perhaps she joined the force about that time ? Who knows. So if she did that, she would have been Edith Sansom when she joined.
Will keep researching.
Thanks for your help.
Regards Leonie
Mum used to write to Edith in England during the war and send her food parcels, and she used to send us cardboard cutouts of the cathedrals and palaces with the coloured foil paper for the windows. Funny how we remember things.

Question Waverley Temperance Hotel
Hi, can anyone help, I am trying to find The Waverley 'Temperance' hotel in Leominster 1920c may have closed by the 1930s. The proprietor was Edith Sansom; nee Mahon. Husband Capt. John Ernest Sansom (Royal Garrison Artillery). It is also possible Edith became a police sergeant???
Any help welcomed. Thanks, Symbo

Hi again Sylvia,
Thanks for that. Yes, we believe we know "Symbo" and knew of the Temperance Hotel, which was not a success under Edith. We don't know, though, what became of the Hotel after Edith had it.
We just need to find, now, police records we can look up.
Thanks again Leonie
