heather Report 22 May 2012 15:30

Charlie Trusler was my great grandfather.
He was born in 1869 in Frensham Nr. Farnham Surrey.
Died 1914

On the 1871 census he was living with his parents Thomas and Mary in Frensham
On the 1881 census living with parents - down as Charles living in Frensham
On the 1891 census he seems to have disappeared
On the 1901 census he was married to Elizabeth - living in Farnham with 4 children.

Does any-one know where he was in 1891.

Did you find the rest of the family in 1891?

have you tried looking for him in records that are mistranscribed?

Porkie_Pie Report 22 May 2012 15:42

Just looked at Stuart's post with possible army service records

If he was a serving soldier in 1891 he could still be listed in the census,

try searching with minimul info such as just name and birth year +/- 5 years and so on

On ancestry you can search for soldiers, in the drop down box for relationship to head

also instead of entering the name Charles enter it as Chas

Mum didn't seem to think Charlie joined the army or any of the forces - but perhaps she was wrong.

It could only have been for a short time as he was married in 1892 and showed on the census after this as a navvy.

On the 1891 census his parents Thomas and Mary were living with his two brothers Robert and James
Elizabeth had married
Thomas William and Tom had all died
Emma was a servant in Guildford
I haven't yet found out where Cornelious is.

Thank you all for your time.

I'll have to do some more research but this does look as though this is our Charlie.
If you type in Charlie Trusler - Farnham in 'search' there do only appear to be two.
My grandfather and great grandfather.

I'm not sure Mum will believe it - didn't know any of the family had been in prison, and an alias what was that all about.

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 22 May 2012 18:05

From his army record it looks like he would probably be in prison at the time of the 1891 census, so you may not find him under his full name or alias, some prisons and other institutions just entered inmates with initials only so can be very hard to find, you could also check for court records on ancestry

Can't understand if this is my Charlie why when his father Thomas lived in Frensham on all the census records his nok (his father) lived in Dunn or Downing Street Farnham. Thomas never appeared to live anywhere other than Frensham.

Another mystery.

Porkie_Pie Report 22 May 2012 18:24

I think you need to bear in mind that Charles was using an alias
