Did they emmigrate to America?

there is a record for a Selby E Nokes who died in 1990 on the Washington Death Index on ancestry

it has a year of birth, however I cannot read it as I don't have "worldwide"

Denise, are you related to these people? As you're looking for living people, other members usually like a little indication of what the connection was.

You can find for yourself whether Selby Nokes had siblings, full siblings anyway. (Just brothers? Odd.)

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Just search for the name of Selby Nokes.

Oh. Well, I was going to say: the record will tell you his mother's surname, and then you just search for other Nokes births with the same mother's surname.

However, there is no birth for a Selby Nokes in England/Wales.

[edit - I'm an idiot, no Nokes-Gibbons births]

Ah, so Margaret followed him back to the US.

Ancestry also has

U.S. World War II Army Enlistment Records, 1938-1946
Military
Name: Selby E Nokes
Birth: year
Military: date - city, California
Residence: Solano, California

I can't see the details either. ;)

I can't see him in the 1930 US census, but it might be worth looking at Nokes-s in California, and for possible mistranscriptions of the name.

Well going by this thread I don't think this has anything to do with Denise. He just has the same surname as her father

Well, wasn't that fun ...

One more reason to ask first about the connection. I get tired of these pointless wild goose chases.

I was saddened to read this.

I had seen Denise's response to an old thead whilst doing my 'rounds', had suggested that she post a thread of her own and now see that she took my advice. She is obviously a new poster who has little knowledge of how these boards work and I doubt she deliberately set out to put anyone onto a wild goose chase.

It seems as though she has somehow found out about this Selby Nokes marrying a Margaret Gibbons, then she sees a message from someone called Margaret Gibbons - perhaps by putting the name Gibbons into the filter box - and has then tried to contact that lady in the vain hope that there is a connection - a longshot as she herself states.

Reading between the lines, it sounds to me as though Denise is anxious to find out more about her father Ronald Nokes, and is just hoping that Selby may be a brother - half brother whatever.

I always try to remember how I felt as a newbie, not knowing how or where to search and getting myself in a muddle as I tried to explain what I was looking for. I still get in a muddle sometimes!

I hope Denise finds what she is looking for.....somewhere.

If Denise had bothered to return to her thread to answer my questions in the very first place ...

This thread was also started before Denise replied to the old posting
