Hi. I am trying to find out when this chap died (about 1880-1883) or any other personal information. I have his birth and marriage details, and cencus information regarding his family, but can find no trace of a death record. Would love to know more about this man (he is a g-g-grandfather).

Who did he marry?

Was his wife listed as a widow in 1881?

Scott,

You listed 1880-1883 for his death. I was pointing out he was still alive in 1881.

Where is the family in 1891 and 1901?

I note that Emiline went to Australia in 1884. I couldn't find a record of it but found it on a tree on Ancestry. She married there in 1885 so are you sure that Joseph died or did she just leave him. It's a big move for a new widow with young children to make alone. Maybe she was going to be with Joseph who had travelled earlier and he died soon after. Can't locate a death record for him in UK under either Samuel or Joseph but it could be mistranscribed of course.

Oh yes, I should have realized that! I know he died, it must have been between 1881 and 1884 as his wife (Emmiline) and two children emmigrated to Perth, Western Australia (where I live) and she is listed as a widow. She died in Perth in 1939 I think...

Not sure if this is her re-marriage in 1933 or a daughter.

Terence W Brennan

Several trees on Ancestry have Violet as a daughter, but not one has the correct date for her birth.

Births Mar 1883
ALDEN Violet Emmeline Bristol 6a 40

This means Joseph/Samuel was still alive in 1882.

Looks like he went to Australia.

If you Google his name, someone called Christine has posted that he was mentioned as "abroad" in his mother's will in 1885.

You say Emmeline is listed as a widow when she arrives so perhaps he died on the journey?

Rose/Astra,

Hi Rose - I can't thank you enough!!

This has been the breakthrough I have been looking for; I have only become a member of this site a few days ago and it has already paid off, thanks to your input. I am in contact with the above lady who is also a member, and she confirms what she said on that post (in 2001).

It looks like Emmilne did leave him, because Joseph's mother, Susannah, wrote him in her will in 1885 **thanks Astra (and she did marry a Redfearne in 1885)** and there is every indication that he WAS still alive. There is no record of him coming to Perth. I am going to search far and wide for him!! Our family has always assumed that he had just 'up and died'! (a genealogy report compiled years ago states this, but they didn't have the resources we have now).

Thanks again, and I will let you know if I come up with anything...

Scott.
