Trying to find Appleby

I am trying to find out more about William Appleby, who was born 1852 or 1853 (possibly in Winson Green, Birmingham) and was recorded (working away from home in London) in both the 1881 and 1901 census, was married twice (in Tipton, Staffordshire, England) to Maria Horton and Elizabeth Wilkinson) and fathered Emma, Lucy and John (the latter in 1877). As there seems to be no record of his birth under the name William Appleby, our only theory is that he could have been adopted,(or illegitimate? - which might explain his birth not being registered) Any help would be greatly appreciated! Vic Davies (for Karen Appleby - William's descendant)
