So I was in the middle of a big long George Varney post, and Firefox crashed. Saved me the William Varney bit -- Andrew's done that now!

There is no recorded marriage between Jane Cass and George Varney.

I suspect that this is the George Varney in question.

1871:

Name: George Varney
Age: 19
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1852
Relation: Lodger
Gender: Male
Where born: Bloxsom, Oxfordshire, England (Bloxham, one would think)
Civil Parish: West Ham
Ecclesiastical parish: [Plaistow Marsh]
Town: Silverton
County/Island: Essex
Country: England
Occupation: Sailor
Registration district: West Ham
Sub-registration district: West Ham

1881:

Name: George Varney
Age: 28
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1853
Relation: Lodger
Gender: Male
Where born: Banbury, Oxfordshire, England
Civil Parish: Harmmersmith
County/Island: London
Country: England
Street address: 18 Overstone Rd
Occupation: Coachman
Registration district: Fulham
Sub-registration district: St Paul Hammersmith

And in 1891, married to someone else:

Name: George Varney
Age: 39
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1852
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Caroline
Gender: Male
Where born: Banbury, Oxfordshire, England
Civil Parish: Isleworth
Ecclesiastical parish: St Stephens
Town: Hounslow
County/Island: Middlesex
Country: England
Occupation: Horse breaker
Registration district: Brentford
Sub-registration district: Isleworth
ED, institution, or vessel: 6

Henry Robinson 3 - nephew
Caroline Varney 31
George Varney 39

This would explain why young William went straight to his grandparents, as was often the case for children of unmarried parents.

I haven't had any luck with finding Jane after 1861, when this appears to be her:

Name: Jane Cass
Age: 6
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1855
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: William
Mother's Name: Ann
Gender: Female
Where born: Isle of Wight, Newchurch
Civil Parish: Newchurch
Ecclesiastical parish: St Catherine
Town: Ventnor
County/Island: Hampshire
Country: England
Registration district: Isle Of Wight
Sub-registration district: Godshill
ED, institution, or vessel: 6
Household schedule number: 13

Ann Cass 31
Charles Cass 2
Eliza E Cass 8
Jane Cass 6
Mary A Cass 4
William Cass 38
William E Cass 10
Henry Deuness 19
John Henry Drudge 28
George Spanner 28
