i am trying to find the mothers surname. would somebody please check the census to see if it mentions the mother please?

There is a marriage for Richard Cole in 1839 Totnes but not yet found the name of the bride

So the marriage was before 1837 when registration came in and you will need to access parish records find it.Ancestry has some but you need a larger subscription than I have but if you include Devon Parish records in your heading you could get someone with a Cd which they could search for you though if it was in a free church even that will not provide the wedding details

If this is an incorrect reading of Richard/Robert then Jane's maiden name is probably Cousins!!

So it look like there is a Richard AND a Robert Cole with a wife Jane.
