Trying to find wife of Arthur Cole (born 1848) married around 1870 or 1871 in Maryelbone or St Pancras London as first child Edward William born c1872. Arthur has no middle name.

There are these two possible marriages but you really need Edward William's birth certificate to be sure you have the right marriage:-

Name: Arthur Cole
Year of Registration: 1871
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Camberwell
County: Greater London, London, Surrey
Volume: 1d
Page: 921

or:-

Name: Arthur Cole
Year of Registration: 1871
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Kensington
County: Greater London, London, Middlesex
Volume: 1a

I assume you have this from the marriage cert? How do you know when Arthur was born?
I can find no obvious entries on census reports and there are several possible births for both of them so looking for an Arthur Cole marriage won't help.
Can I ask about Edward's marriage cert. We need address, occupation (for him and Arthur) and witnesses.

Have you found Arthur on any census records please?

Do you have his son Edward William's birth certificate?

Hi John
Do you know that Edward William lived? The reason I ask is because I have found a promising family for the marriage that Kathleen found in Camberwell in 1871 but by 1881 the oldest child is 7 and no Edward William. There are however a couple of possible deaths of children under one. I won't bore you with all the details in case you know that he lived.

John Report 30 Jul 2010 11:52

I have Edward William Cole marriage certificate which was 2.8.1891 and gives father as Arthur Cole ( deceased ). Arthur was a scupltor and Edward was a bricklayer / labourer.

I also have Arthur Cole birth cert 3.2.1848.

Have you found Edward with his parents on the 1881 census please? I just can't see him with a sister Eliza (assuming that 1891 census is your Edward).

Do you have Edward's birth certificate please? Is edward's marriage certificate the only documentation that you have showing his father as Arthur? If so remember that the information is only what Edward wanted on the certificate! So I am assuming that as you give no christian name for Arthur's wife on your opening post, that you don't have it. How can you be sure that Edward's father's name was Arthur please?

Christine2

Christine2 Report 30 Jul 2010 12:45

This looks like the most likely birth for Edward? Might be worth getting the birth cert to check father. If it's the right one it would give you the mother.

It does sound likely to be true rootgatherer as Arthurs father was a stone mason.

I have no idea about this:

Marriages Sep 1871 (>99%)
Cole Arthur Kensington 1a 134
THURTEL (I have my doubts as to that name) Eliza Elizabeth Kensington 1a 134

Marriages Sep 1877 (>99%)
Cole Eliza Elizabeth Kensington 1a 66
McConnell Thomas Kensington 1a 66
(same couple,I think, that Edward and Eliza are with in 1891. I tried Eliza on the 1881,but only the McConnell children are with her.)

I have know idea how I went wrong on the 1881 before! Here's the family:
1881
Name: Edward Connell
Age: 9
Estimated birth year: abt 1872
Relation: Son
Father's Name: Thomas M.
Mother's Name: Eliza
Gender: Male
Where born: Kensal Town
Civil parish: Chelsea
County/Island: London
Country: England
Street Address: 8 Adela Ter
Occupation: Scholar
Registration district: Chelsea
Sub-registration district: Chelsea, North-East
ED, institution, or vessel: 16c
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
Thomas M. Connell 28
Eliza Connell 27
Edward Connell 9
Eliza Connell 8
Gertrude Connell 3
Elizabeth Connell 1
Florence Connell
Source Citation: Class: RG11; Piece: 90; Folio: 65; Page: 8; GSU roll: 1341020.

So Edward and sister Eliza are under their step father's name.

Maureen

Edit: I'm leaving my "know idea" on here. Sweet fancy Moses-what was I thinking????

Christine / Maureen

Well done that all looks very hopeful! If Arthur got married and died between 1871 and 1881 then he wouldn't appear on any census with Edward.

Great work Ladies!

John

John Report 1 Aug 2010 15:28

I have not found Edward with his parents on any census. The only recoed I have for him is the 1891 census when he is with his sister Eliza but I dont know about the Eliza McConnell being their mother. On Edward Williams marriage cert in 1891 the father is Arthur Cole deceased ( sculptor ) so I am confident I have the right Arthur.

Christine2

Christine2 Report 1 Aug 2010 15:51

Yes John but if you look above you will see that our theory is that Arthur died in March 1876, after his marriage to Eliza Elizabeth and she then married Thomas McConnell in 1877. So Arthur would be Edwards father and deceased when he married.

That would also explain why you can't find Edward with both parents on a census. If his father married his mother and died between census.
