Trying to find Davidson

I would appreciate help in finding out a little more about my Great Grandfather. His name was George Davidson and these are the few facts I know about him. He was a soldier at least from 1874 to 1879. There is no record of a wedding locally in the Braintree District or nationally with the GRO but he had 2 children,a boy called George in 1873 and a girl Agnes ( my grandmother) in 1874. The children's mother was Sarah Whipps from Shalford in Essex and when she registered the birth she called herself Davidson and that was the name on her death certificate. Agnes married in 1901 but her father George was recorded as deceased and his occupation before death was a gardener. I do not know George's birth year or place or the regiment he served in.
