I know he lived in Ryhope in 1881 with wife Margaret who he married in 1873 and daughter Ellen b 1873 In 1882 they went to Canada where Margaret died. He came home with Ellen (my grandmother) and from what we were told sent her to an Aunt in Sunderland while he went off somewhere on his own. Have not been able to trace what happened to hom. Any help would be appreciated. |

Ah, I see from Ann's tree on Ancestry that Ellen married William Poynton in Tynemouth, in 1891. |

As you say Ellen married William Poynton in Tynemouth 1891. He was born William Pointon in 1863 in Burslem Staffs. As he could not read nor write when he joined army his name was changed by whoever filled in his papers so Poynton remained. All I know is she is on the 1891 census in Cramlington. My brother can remember her telling him she was 16 when she came back to England so that would be around 1889 or so. |

I do not think this is the same Edward Elliott as the 1881 census I found shows him in Ryhope with his wife and my grandmother on it also his stepson George Russell. He married Margaret in 1872. Thanks all the same. |

Hello again Ann. If I understood correctly your initial enquiry was to find out what happened to Edward Elliott. I'm just posting the 1881 that you mentioned so we can use it as a reference point: |

Thanks for this. It is looking as though he came back and remarried then according to the 1901 census he has another son George about 1891. It would be great if somehow I could contact someone from his second family to verify this. He must have forgotten about hs daughte Ellen. I am really enjoying being able to get help with my queries from helpful people. |

Yes I have the 1911 census the last birth on it is my mother. I also do not live that far from Seghill and used to visit it a lot when my grandmother was alive. She died in Stanley Gardens. I am really getting into this now. As you suggest I willk look up marriage certificate. Do I have to request a copy or can I do it on line? |
