Find Ancestors

I've already attempted this search and abandoned it a few years ago but I feel the time has come for another stab at it!!

My grandmother's father was called Frederick Nicholls, born around 1895 in Gloucester. His father was William (henry) Nicholls, possibly a housebuilder. Frederick left the family around 1940 and no trace of him was ever found. I suggested the possibly of him entering the war but my grandmother believed him to be too old for services. His last know place of residence was in Plymouth. My grandmother has often thought if him over the past 60 odd years(!!) and I would love to be able to find out something for her, even if it's only the names of her grandparents and other family. I don't think we'll ever discover what happened to Frederick but just to find out something about his parents/siblings would mean a great deal to a crumbly old woman!! (Joke - she's not offended, honest!)

Oh my God, thank you everyone, truly! Never expected such a response - and so incredibly helpful. I've also found the same family (William and Ellen) and am attempting to locate a birth certificate for Frederick to hopefully tie them all in but how do you know for definate if you have the right family??!! It does appear to be the only family around that time in Gloucester with the William/Fred-Frederick connection so I guess I'll have to presume it's the right one?!
