Find Ancestors

Hi. Can anyone help me find the parents of William Rigby, born 1806/1808 in Woodplumton Preston Lancs? I have found him on the 1851 census in st Peters district of Preston. Many thanks.

Was he married on 1851 census ?

Yes, to Mary from Broughton (I think it says) age 38

I have looked at that, but it's a different place I think

1841 for Nicolas & Catherine Rigby. There is a William living with them (who may or may not be their son) born 1816.

Who was 38, William or Mary ?

If you could give the names and birthdates of any children listed in 1851 it would help.

No likely marriage on Lancsbmd from 1837.

Only a possiblility but there is this on IGI

If they had children after 1837, the mother's maiden name would be on their birth certs.

Hiya. The children listed on 1851 census are William age 16, George age 10 (I think), Margaret age 11. One thing is the Rigby family were catholic if that makes a difference. Thanks.

Sorry Mike I forgot to say that Mary was 38 on 1851 census, William was 42/43.

The childrens births would appear to confirm the above marriage.

Having assertained that your William married Mary Cottam in 1834 in Preston, your best bet would be Preston Records Office where you can search ( or ask for a search ) through the Catholic records for the marriage registers for that date.

Most Catholic marriages name the fathers at least.

From there you may be able to find William's baptism once you have a parents name to work from.

there are quite a few RC churches in Preston + one at FERNYHALGH which served Broughton

Hi. It could have been St John's. I have a marriage for his son William there. Thanks for anything you can find.

There isn't an RC church St John's in Preston - St John's (now Preston Minster) is the CofE parish church.
