Which census have you actually got them on ?

Sandra, this will be a very long shot.

Have you found James & Harriet on a census to verify their place of birth? They may have lived down Hereford way, but may not mean they were born there.

Do you have Harriet's surname or any of their children's dates & places of birth? It's a good idea to check these out before spending money on certificates.

Don't worry you're not confusing us. I'm just concerned you may spend money on the wrong certificates.

Here is Harriet as a widow with her younger children in 1891:

1891 Wales Census
Name: Harriet Smith
Age: 58
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1833
Relation: Head
Gender: Female
Where born: Bponlane, Staffordshire, England [actually Broadheath, Hereford on image]
Civil parish: Llantarnam
Ecclesiastical parish: Llantarnam
Town: Cwmbran
County/Island: Monmouthshire
Country: Wales
Street Address: View image
Condition as to marriage: View image
Education: View image
Employment status: View image
Occupation: View image
Registration district: Newport
Sub-registration district: St Woollos
ED, institution, or vessel: 19
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
Harriet Smith 58
James Smith 22 - fireman; Sponlane, Staffordshire
Alice Smith 19 - Tin worker; Sponlane, Staffordshire
Edward Smith 16 - Iron Works; Llanfrechfa, Monmouthshire
James James 5 - grandson; Llantarnam, Monmouthshire

I've transcribed Edward and James James's birthplaces as per the image. There is an error on Ancestry. Sponlane or Spon Lane is in West Bromwich & I think that is what Wartbromwick & Walbromwick actually should be in 1871 though that is not what is on the image.

Deaths Sep 1882
Smith James 46 Monmouth 11a 14

This is a possibility for his death but that's not going to help you find his parents.

Have you found his marriage to Harriet at all?

Ozibird Report 2 Aug 2009 23:45

I cannot find James's marriage to Harriet or him on a census before 1871. I know it is not an unusual name but we should be able to find Thomas Valentine Smith.
