Thanks for putting this post on for us. I do not 100% think that our Abraham was born in Huddersfield as I have looked the Huddersfield Parish records up and only found one Abraham but he he was still alive in 1851 and our Abraham died in October 1849 in Huddersfield. On the death certificate it says he was 39 years old. He married Louisa Quarmby in 1845 at St Peters in Leeds and they were living at Hunslet, Leeds. Abraham was a widower when he married Louisa. His occupation was Cloth Dresser. Who was he married to and where was he in 1841? His father was David Smith and his occupation was a Cartwright. Did they live in Huddersfield or Leeds? Just hope someone can help us. I have studied the records for Abraham Smith married to Elizabeth in Huddersfield and unfortunately this is not our Abraham. |

Where are Abraham and Louisa on census reports? Can't see them at all. Just wondered what children are living with them? Also, who are the witnesses to the marriage? |

The Abraham Smith married to Elizabeth Mortimer with father of Abraham being David. I thought before that I had cracked the puzzle but this Abraham is still alive in 1851. Our Abraham married Louisa Quarmby in 1845 at St Peters, Leeds. Louisa was born in 1817 in Woodlesford, Rothwell and moved to Pudsey. Abraham died in Huddersfield on the 3rd October 1849 of Asiatic Cholera and his daughter Louisa Adelaide was born at 2 Croppers Row, Huddersfield on the 30th September 1849. In October Louisa and Abraham had another daughter Sarah born 1846. Louisa Smith with Sarah and Louisa Adelaide are on the 1851 census living at Old Chapel Town, Old Chapel Yard, Pudsey. In 1861 Louisa was living at Chapel Fold Pudsey with Sarah but little Louisa Adelaide had already died. Louisa Smith now had a son Albert our great grandfather. No fathers name is on the birth certificate. We presume that Louisa went to live near her parents after the death of Abraham. I just think that Hunslet is the clue and perhaps Abraham and Louisa moved to Huddersfield because of work. On the marriage record which was 26 January 1845 the witnesses were Richard Hanson and R H Pickard. and Abrahams occupation was Cloth deeper. Any help in solving this mystery would be appreciated. |

If you accept the 1841 census where abraham is a cloth dyer (deeper??). then his first wifes name is hannah. A search for that marriage or childrens births may further your search. |
