My great grand-father was called George Smith and his father was called John Smith . George was born 1849 or 1848 as I have his marriage and death certificates and I have located him on the censuses. I have 3 birth certificates for him and all have the father's name as John. How do I know which is the right one ? Any ideas anyone ?
Thanks

Is there any clue in the father's occupation?

jeb101 Report 5 Apr 2010 13:33

Hi Michael,
On his marriage certificates his father is a sailmaker but on the birth certificates he is a labourer.

All 3 a labourer?

Do the marriage witnesses not help? (sometimes you can tie them up to the census as siblings or cousins)

Could you point him out on one of the earlier census please?

There must be siblings to follow and 'match up' ?

Can you post the census where you have George who you KNOW to be the correct one and we can start from there?

On the first marriage certificates John and Mary Smith are the witnesses and on the second it is the new in-laws. The birth certificates give the mother's name as either Sarah or Ann.
I'm looking through my papers so please bear with me.

Can you give us an early census to look at while you sort through your paperwork?

Hi again,
August 1870 George is living at New George Street , Hull aged 21 ( from his marriage certificate).
1871 census living at 65 New George Street , Hull with his wife Ann.
1880 George is living in Goole ( 2nd marriage). Aged 31 years.
1881 living at 40 Back South Street, Goole with wife Fanny.
1891 3 English Buildings , Hook.
1901 14 Rose Terrace , Hull.
1911 20 Sister's Terrace, Tadman Street, Hull.
He died in 1917 and was living at 5 Victoria Terrace, Newton Street , Hull.
Aged 68 years.
Interestingly, he uses the middle name Whitehouse in the later censuses and on his marriage certificates, but this is not on the birth certificates I have.

Hi Dea,
I thought that might have been him on the 1851 census as the parents are John and Sarah. I have been thinking that maybe he lied about his age on the first marriage certificate , as he was one month away from his 21st birthday. I've been working on his year of birth as 1850 , from his marriages, but from the census and death certs his year of birth was 1848/9. Do you think his age was wrong on his 1st marriage cert ? If so , then his year of birth was 1850 and 1851 census you found will be right.
Hope this makes sense .

Hi LadyKira,
Thanks for looking. You have found both of his marriages, to Ann and Fanny, that's what makes me think the census records I've found are right.
