I am stuck trying to find the remaining 3 children for Henry and Eliza Smith....I have kept all of the research data from this thread for reference.
I have listed the children found at the end of this thread.

no such thing as divorce for the ordinary man in those days. Have you found his birth registration ?

You will need to compare professions addredded witnesses to work out the correct one. Also get to the the ones that are not yours to help eliminate possible records.

DO you have later census records to give some markers?

Try this one to start with

No Lindsay, no records anywhere that I am limited to find.
That's the marriage that looked suitable, but I see the birth year is 1830, so too early for my Henry.
There was another suitable marriage I found on FREE BMD, but it couldn't decipher the page number, so don't know if there was an Eliza in it.
Apart from a few Henry Smiths in Bethnal Green in the 1841 and 1851 census', I can't find any trace of his birth, parents or marriage.

no problem , where did you get him from ? Is he on a census , does he have children etc, please ?

Just had a look at one of the census I have saved.
Maureen, if you take a look at the original view of the 1861 census, you will see underneath, nextdoor at 3 Digby is FREDERICK SMITH, and his wife Eliza, who mysteriously reappears after disappearing in the 1841 and 51 census.
Coincidence?

Wendy

Wendy Report 14 Apr 2010 14:17

I do have that census, but extra children on it, though Harriet, Eliza (My G Grandmother), Elizabeth and Henry all fit..but have learned my lesson regarding guessing.

Spouse Name: Eliza Broomhead 3 Ely Place
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 18 Jun 1860
Parish: St Andrew, Bethnal Green
County: Middlesex
Borough: Tower Hamlets
Father Name: Frederick Smith Occ: Cordwainer
Spouse Father Name: James Broomhead Occ:Turner
Witnesses were James Broomhead and Elizabeth Smith

This looks like the one Maureen.

Years fit, Elizabeth would have been Henry's mother or sister.
And this would give me a definite to the 41 and 51 census.

And this is the one marriage record I couldn't access on Free BMD because the transcribers couldn't read the page number.

But again, I have to be sure.

Wendy

Wendy Report 14 Apr 2010 14:23

What I now need to do is to look into the other children listed...Alice, Alfred and John.

LadyKira

LadyKira Report 14 Apr 2010 14:26

Far from disappearing I think if you look at the 1861 It says that Frederick is a shoemaker from Norfolk which fits in with the 1841 and 1851 I posted earlier.

Does your Eliza's marriage come up in the London marriages? Just wondering if we can compare signatures for this one:
Name: Alfred James Smith Occ:Glass Silverer 13 The Grove Homerton
Age: 22
Estimated birth year: abt 1877
Spouse Name: Rosetta Drew
Spouse Age: 21
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 18 Jun 1899
Parish: St John at Hackney
County: Middlesex
Borough: Hackney
Father Name: Henry Smith Occ:Shopkeeper
Spouse Father Name: Thomas Drew Occ:Blacksmith
Witnesses were Henry Smith and >>>>>Eliza Smith

At least one of them had a middle name,so his birth cert might not be too hard to find.

My apologies, used to reading it as head then wife, especially with the age difference.
Interesting though that William is listed in the 1841 census age 20, then listed in the 1851 census age 29 and a son. Possible it should have read 10 in 1841 and it is 19 in 1851. Also possible Frederick had William with a previous wife, then married Elizabeth after.

Maureen, 1901 ... Henry Smith, aged 60 confirmed living at 13 The Grove, Homerton. BINGO.

Just sourced 1881 census for Thomas Drew...boy did that family get around.
