It's not the easiest site to use, but Medway Cityark has scaned images of original parish registers. As you don't know the church you would have to check through them all. I know they definitely cover the Chatham area.
Smith is a known traveller name but you would have to look at William's occupation to get some sort of clue as to whether he was a traveller or not.
"The following occupations were commonly practised by Gypsies, who provided goods and services to local communities in the course of their travels. The terms dealer and general dealer were frequently used by Gypsies from the late 19th century, but the terms were also used to describe other traders and shopkeepers. A marine store dealer was a dealer in scrap materials.
hawker, licensed hawker, pedlar basket maker, mat maker, beehive maker, brush maker, chair bottomer, sieve bottomer tinker, tinman, razor grinder, knife grinder dealer, general dealer, marine store dealer, wardrobe dealer peg maker, umbrella mender, chimney sweep, horse dealer"
However, he could co-incidentally have one of those occupations!!
If I've found the right Rossela Smith on the 1861 - she's down as Rosalie Milton - she didn't appear to stay in the community (if she was ever in it!) as her husband was a mariner.
