Have I come to the end??

Hi Everyone

Not sure whether I have come to the end of the line - I have found my Great Grt Grt Grandad who is William Smith, however because it is prior to 1800 is this all that I can find - I don't know who his parents are as the marriage record from the Norfolk Parish record does not show or confirm who his mum and dad were and also on the earliest cenus I can look at the 1841 - his wife is already a widow

Any ideas??

Thanks

Middy Report 26 Aug 2010 11:38

Hi

Unfortunately it doesn't say his job.

They had children, William Smith born 1803, James Smith born 1807, Mary Smith born 1809, Henry Christmas Smith born 1815, Martha Smith born 1815 and Sophia Smith born 1817 all in Wymondham in Norfolk

Thanks

Yes that's him.

I love his middle name and disappointed he didn't have any children as would have loved that name to have followed down the line to me, ha ha!!

Hi SAFC

Yes this is what I have found - have tried to look for William's birth but with the surname Smith and not knowing who his parents are I feel I may have come to the end

Christmas seems to have been used as a middle name quite alot over the years in Norfolk.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGINorfolk/C/Christmas.htm#Title

You could also consider looking at Poor Law records for Wymondham and it looks as if the local Archive holds some/all?

http://www.eastinvolve.net/wymondham-archive/

If you are 'lucky' and the family appear in the records you may get clues that can help in working out his parents. Poor Law records certainly helped sorted out my Brunts in Hampstead!

Good luck
Chris

Hi Chris

On your post you mentioned about the Poor law records - would I need to go to Wymondham to see them - I have gone to the web address but can't see how to look for them?

Thanks

Middy

If I was you I would telephone the Archive (number is on the site), explain your problem and ask them if they have records that could help.

If they suggest they do have records and you cannot visit in person then ask how you could get searches done.
How and for what fee?

It may be that they will do it 'in house' for a fee or may refer you to a known researcher who will do so, also, for a fee.

Good luck
Chris
