Julie Report 16 Sep 2010 17:50

I am trying to find relatives of my Grandfather. His name was Frank Richard Smith and was born on the 18th June 1921 in Brixton/Lambeth in London. He married to May Osborn and they had 3 children.
I believe he was 1 of 12 and his mothers name was Alice Smith.
As far as we know he had brothers called Albert and Jim and sisters called Dolly and Nancy. We are unsure of the other siblings names.

Do you mean that his Mother was unmarried, that her maiden name was also Smith, or just that she became Alice Smith on marriage?
Thanks

patchem Report 16 Sep 2010 18:22

Could you be a year out with his birth?
Frank R Smith
Mother's Maiden Surname: Poulter
Date of Registration: Jul Aug Sep 1922
Registration district: Lambeth
Registration county: Greater London
Volume Number: 1d
Page Number: 757

If this is the correct birth, there are about 8 children with the same parents born in Lambeth.

I did not put up the births, as some will probably be still alive.

We need Julie to get back to us, with any more information.

Julie

Julie Report 16 Sep 2010 18:37

And...i did

Julie

Julie Report 16 Sep 2010 19:45

Thanks for all your help but Poulter is not one of my family names.
We think Franks (my Grandfather) mothers maiden name was Millett. Also, as far as we are aware, none of my Granfathers siblings are still alive.
Any further help would be much appreciated. None of the family have ever come from West Ham. They all came from Lambeth Walk.
Thanks again x

Can't see a Frank Smith with a MMN of Millett

Nope can't find any Smith/Millett births in Lambeth

I think your safest way is to get the marriage cert of Frank and Mary.
That will give his fathers name.
At the moment you are asking us to look for A family of

Unknown Smith
Alice unknown

children
Frank Richard (Frank could be Francis)
Albert
Jim (James)
Dolly (could be Dorothy or Doris)
Nancy (maybe Ann)
and others.
That is not enough information to get a result.

the above frank and may not MARY

LadyKira

LadyKira Report 16 Sep 2010 22:45

Frank and Mary came up as the only Smith/Osbourne marriage so is maybe a typing error or mistranscription. Julie has not commented on the marriage.

May can be a nickname for Mary

LadyKira

LadyKira Report 17 Sep 2010 08:10

There are just too many variables and not enough information.
Where did you get Millett from as I can see no evidence for it?

Julie

Julie Report 17 Sep 2010 08:18

I couldn't see no evidence either

Thank you for all your help. Sadly I do not have internet access all the time so cannot always reply swiftly.
I can confirm that my grandmothers name was definitely May Osborne and not Mary Osborne (there was no 'e' on the end of the Osborne).
All of the names I have given you are correct.
This has turned into quite a puzzle and thanks again for your assistance.

Julie
sometimes our ancestors varied spellings as literacy was poor. I have seen documents where there are wide variations in the spelling of one name and they referred to the same person. If for instance your ancestor told the registrar his name the regrar would write it down as he heard it. Then of course transcribers have to come along and interpret the writing that they see. so with a name like Osbourn I would search for Osb*urn* to bring up all variants .

This is the only marriage. Unless you have evidence of another one.
You have not yet given more details re dates etc.
I also asked where the name Millet came from?
