Essington war memorial, Staffordshire

The war memorial at St Johns Church Essington Staffordshire lists a Thomas Smith having died during the 1st world war. How can I find out any more information.

Difficult, with such a common name. You could plough through the surviving WW1 service records on Ancestry to see if a man of that name with connections to the place has records. You could also look at the 1911 census to see if a man of that name or his family were living there.

There's also Soldiers Died in the Great War which normally lists a man's birthplace and where he was living - you could look at all the men of that name to see if any match up. It's available on Ancestry.
