Keeley1973 Report 2 May 2011 16:22

Hi. Can anyone help with thoughts about tracing additional children that I don't have info for? I am not sure if there is an easy (or "easier"!) way than BMD records when you have such common surnames and no real idea of first names. I have been told that Gladys (nee Green) & Edward married in 1909 had around 20 children. Unfortunately don't have the relatives alive to ask for clarification but we have only so far got commitment on around 9 of them born between 1914 and 1939 (I have gaps between 1915-1918 - assume this is due to the war, then 1923-1926 and also 1932 to 1939 but this last one could be right as she would have been into her 40's by then). We have tracked one who no-one knew from 1915 (Albert W) so assume he died in infancy. We heard there was a Dolly (though not sure whether this is short for Dorothy or similar) and we suspect she was maybe the first born - she is likely to have died young also. There are lots with both names born around 1910 and I cannot see the mothers maiden name for these so unsure which, if any are correct. We also believe there would be a Gladys born very early on in the marriage - again probably deceased very young. I understand we would not necessarily get anywhere by visiting the area (Islington) as alot of the churches no longer exist. I am happy to order some birth certs to clarify if we can get 90% of the way there but don't want to go out on a limb with the search results I am getting at the moment.

Thanks for any assistance. If I can answer any questions, just ask what you need to know - I am quite new at this so not sure what is needed.

Thanks
Keeley

Yes, there is a quicker way, but there is 3 pages of smith/green births in London between 1912 and 1940 was everyone born in Islington?

Yes, all the others were born in Islington except the last one we actually know of called Anthony Patrick B. 1939 who I believe was born in Edmonton.

Keeley1973 Report 2 May 2011 16:42

Yes, that is the correct couple. I know they didnt have any living children at that time but just thought they might have had 1 or more who had already died. It seems she was actually only 16 when she got married (though the marriage cert says 18) so we wondered if she was already pregnant at that time :-)

Okay, so I have a list of 6 extra years but most of them have 2 options per year and can only be one correct (if any) so if I order Birth Certs for them the that should confirm me the actual parents? I am nt sure about the Albert, I just assumed it was a match so it could just as easily be a Doris instead - seems actually more likely as someone said they remembered a Dolly.

Keeley1973

Keeley1973 Report 2 May 2011 17:24

Yes Pam, that Anthony is correct one

Alemap

Alemap Report 2 May 2011 17:41

Ordering birth certificates will confirm parents. If you are ordering certificates ask for a parent check. It should work out slightly cheaper as you will only pay for the check not the certificate on the incorrect ones.

*****Before ordering certificates.*****
Since you definitely know Anthony is correct if you look up the electoral roll for Edmonton in 1939 you might see some of the siblings listed and be able to work back from there.

Keeley1973 Report 2 May 2011 17:50

Thanks Pam. I will try the parent check, particularly as that Anthony is not on the website under Edmonton. How can you view the Electoral Rolls for that year? I am signed up to two websites but they seem to only let you view current info or the other one shows only the last 9 years?

Alemap Report 2 May 2011 19:51

Sorry I popped out. You should be able to check the Electoral roll at Islington Library.
