Find Ancestors

Have been researching the seven names on the Bourton-on-the-Hill, Glos War Memorial, erected in 1921. Have found the details of six of the names but can find nothing on the seventh. The name is Cyril B C Sprules
Can anyone help?

An Alfred Stanley Sprules born 1892 in Bristol was in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces, next of kin in Somerset 'near Bristol'.

I wondered whether Cyril might have been in the military before so checked the lists in the Imperial Yeomanry

I wondered too, although the initials are in reverse order

Sprules is certainly a Wiltshire name from records in the GRO index

and there is no record of a Cyril Sprules in the index at freebmd

I do wonder about this one

I will just leave that there to rule him out, as I do very much wonder whether Sprules was not Cyril's birth surname

Ann, I checked the household of the family you posted in the 1911 census and there is no Cyril in the household, the father was born in 1875 and the parents married in 1897, who knows, he could be a brother of Cyril but there are many Sprules

but you know, this is interesting, there is no birth of a Sidney Sprules around 1875 .... only 1847 and 1883.

so my wondering whether Sprules was not Cyril's registered surname ...... maybe it wasn't and he and Sidney were brothers ......


The Elsie who is an orphan in 1911 is an entirely different Elsie from the one whose 1904 baptism Ann of green gables posted above ............ so they seem to be on entirely different tracks in fact ..................
