Please could you see if you can find the baptism for James Lord born in 1847 in Witney? Thank you.

According to the 1881 census his surname was transcribed as Lard, he was 34 born in Oxford, and was with his wife Caroline (my relative) in Poplar; they had married in St Mary's, Whitechapel, 30 April 1873. Both were full age, single, and their residence was Whitechapel. He was a Mariner. His father - James Lord, Mariner. Her father - Philip Sadd, Carpenter.

I cannot find him in 1871 but in 1861 he was age 14 on the Victory, in Portsmouth Harbour, born Oxford; and in 1851 he was age 4, born Witney, Oxfordshire, with his elder sister Elizabeth (age 9, born Kingston on Thames, Surrey) and his mother Harriet (age 35, born Horndean, Hampshire).

It is possible that he went to Australia between 1881 and 1885 as a Caroline of the right age with a young son, and an adult Philip Lord (who would be her son before her marriage) travelled to Australia in 1885 to join her husband.

MARY
William Lay married in Charlbury to Mary Ansty 13/9/1821
his parents may have been
William Lay who married Elizabeth Hawkins in Witney 24/3/1789
and also married
Ann Castell in Witney both widows 4/2/1797
I am adding this as you mentioned that Wm Lay 1795 was born in Witney. You of course are quite free to ignore the marriages..
Anyway hope the information helps.

Hello again Margaret.

You were kind enough to check for records of the Dyer family in Hailey and Witney around 1855. These have been very helpful, but have thrown up a query which I need to resolve. I hope you can help.

I need details of a wedding in 1898 between Ada Fanny Dyer and Ernest John Chandler. I suspect this will be in Hailey, though Witney is possible.
I believe Ada's father to be Robert Dyer. Interested also in witnesses.

Would you be kind enough to take a look for me.

Many thanks.

Jim

Is there a marriage for a John SAYER to an Elizabeth X
aound the 1760s ?

They raised their children in East Hagbourne but the marriage is not there.

I have an Arthur Hunt whose birthplace I am trying to track down. His father was Reuben/Ruben (almost certainly) and he (Arthur) was born around 1823-24.

The Census records give various places for his birth, and sometimes have a town which was not even in the county listed next to it! :(

Anyway, one of the references mentions Oxfordshire so if there are any mentions of an Arthur Hunt in Oxfordshire in this time period I would be very grateful for them! :)

Thanks in advance.
