Can we have the full names of Evelyn's brothers, please? (and any explanation where their christian names may have come from - ie Evelyn's Dads family, perhaps)

Cynthia Report 24 Apr 2013 20:42

Okay folks.....here we go.........

DIANE LESLIE MacLEOD born cJune 1906-8 India?

No verification of this birth can be found whatsoever. Searches have been
made of Indian, Scottish and English births by many people but to no avail as yet.

Possibilities: This is not her real name.

DIANE: Searches have been made under: Donaldina, Dolinda, Dolina etc. - nothing found.

LESLIE: She was very attached to her middle name of Leslie and insisted it was spelt that way. She gave the name to one of her sons. Some searches have been made re this name but maybe we need to do more.

MacLEOD : On her marriage certificate (1929 in London), she states her
father to be Major Robert MacLeod of the 1st Seaforth Highlanders, Deceased. Nothing of him can be confirmed despite extensive military searches being made. These can be found on ps 2-4 and 14-15 – 29 and 36 of this thread.

Her family were told that she went to live on Stornoway with ‘Aunt Kate and
cousins Donald & Ishbel (Isabelle)’.

***This family has been researched as probably the family of Rev. Donald MacLeod who was the minister of the church in Tarbat. The present Incumbent of that church has been contacted and was most helpful.

That family consisted of:
Donald Smith MacLeod 1854 -1930 in Roseneath, Dumbarton.
Kate Isles Wylie 1864 - 1935 (Widow) in Roseneath,
Jean Annabella 1888 - ?
Katherine Mary 1890 - ? Married Archibald K. MacLean.
Donald Stanley 1890 – Lieut. RN.
Murdo 1891 - Wounded at Gallipoli
Lizzie Isles 1893 – Married a McMurchie
Hector Ian 1895 – 1916 Killed in Action
Ishbel 1896 – 1976 in Inverness. Married a Grieve
Barabel 1898 – 1923 in Cornwall
Norman 1900 – Wounded in France 1918
Margaret 1900 - ????
Roderick Callum 1902 - ?
Barabel, who was a Seed Analyst, for the Board of Agriculture, died at the
age of 25 in Cornwall. FBG discovered a family by the name of Bolitho one of whom married a MacLeod from Ross-shire. See p. 44 of this thread for more details.

*** PLEASE NOTE. LAST YEAR, A MEMBER OF THE ABOVE FAMILY CONTACTED US TO SAY THAT DIANE IS NOT CONNECTED TO THEM.

Diane stated that she went to school in Stornoway. The most likely school
would be the Nicolson Institute. A search has been made for her under D.L.M but there is no sign of her under that name.

Other local schools have been contacted but there is nothing to be found under D.L.M.

Some doubt has emerged as to whether or not Tarbat is the right place to be looking as it is too far away from Stornoway.

There is no sign of a DLM on the 1911 Scottish census see p.41

The first absolute sighting we have of her is when she started work at Springfield
7.6.1927 - 19.6.1928. There are, apparently, no more notes in her file.

In 1929 she married, as Diane Leslie MacLeod, a Herbert R.J. Roy in London. Up until her marriage, she received a private allowance, source unknown.

The address given on her marriage certificate is 53 Khartoum Road, Wandsworth, London. The Electoral Roll for 1929 shows the family living at that address were named Kirby. There is no sign of Diane anywhere in Khartoum Road . She may just have been boarding there for a short time prior to her marriage.

Our Evelyn was born in 1932 at 44 Dafforne Road, Wandsworth and Diane and her husband show up there on the Electoral Roll. The voters listed at 44 Dafforne Road in 1932 are:

Evelyn Gertrude Goddard-Fenwick Herbert Robert John Roy, Diane Leslie Roy, Kathleen McDowell. The voters listed at the same address in 1931, in case it is of relevance, are Frederick Robert Smithson, Alice Smithson, Edward Hubert Mearing, Doris Mearing, and Kathleen McDowell, and in 1933, Evelyn Gertrude Savile Goddard-Fenwick, Emily Goddard-Fenwick, and Kathleen McDowell. It looks very much as though this was a house which had lodgers.

Some research has been done on the other occupants but nothing worthwhile was found.

Evelyn Goddard-Fenwick is whom our Evelyn is named after and was her
Godmother. See ps. 22-23 of this thread for more details.

Various living Goddard-Fenwick’s have been contacted but to no avail. You can pm me for details on that. We have, over the last couple of years, drawn up a fairly comprehensive family tree for the G-Fs but simply cannot trace the connection.

Just before the search drew to a halt last year, Evelyn remembered her mother reading a local newspaper (Dorset?)in the early 1950's and finding either an article or an obituary about a very old lady who had died in Stornoway aged 91. She stated that it was Aunt Kate.

Scotland's People was searched for possible deaths but again, we drew a blank. It would be helpful if we could get a copy of that newspaper but that's rather a longshot I think - unless ????

So this is where the search is up to so far and many members have taken Evelyn and her search to their hearts.

If anyone feels they would like to tackle any of the unresolved issues or
re-check anything that has already been done….please do so. It may be that something has been missed or new information is available. Any new info can be added on here.

EDIT. FBG's search re the elderly lady's death, can be found between pages 80-89.

Kay.....from the synopsis - that's where I'd seen the name Kirby.... :-)

I'm seeing MacLeods wherever I look these days.... :-D

Thank you for all your efforts, please feel free to follow any leads or links which you think may help.

I have asked Evelyn if she could please let me have the details from her mother's marriage certificate but she can't do anything until the weekend. Even seeing who the witnesses are would be helpful - I think FBG saw a copy of it a couple of years ago.

Kay, I know many passenger lists were looked at re MacLeods but nothing could be found. We certainly won't rule them out though.

Yes, Annie, Diane WAS a fibber apparently - which certainly doesn't help one iota :-(

Like many of you, I just don't understand how a person can suddenly appear, working at Springfield Hospital, and there be no paper trail behind them...... :-S

Very grateful....... :-)

Just a very long shot.

This is Evelyn's post from 2009

Evelyn Report 11 Mar 2009 20:49
I have seen my mothers marriage certificate and it gives her father as Robert Macleod , Major Seaforth Highlanders ,deceased.
She married my father Herbert Robert John Roy in Wandsworth in 1929 and died on 28th July 1953 in Weymouth dorset.
Mum was 46 when she died

So I am looking at the marriage details - and wonder about the following:

Evelyn said she has 'seen' the marriage certificate - is it the original - or from GRO. Either way has anyone seen the original marriage record (is it possible to see it?) - wondering if, just if, there might be something in the parish register in Wandsworth? I have checked (on a different thread) about amendments/ notations in margins, not saying there will be anything but........

Kay????

Kay???? Report 24 Apr 2013 18:24

There are many just as an initial and not in full name on incoming passenger lists,,,

D L Macleod,

Miss D Macleod.

etc........

Diane seems to have fibbed about a lot of things so I wouldn't say that the fact she said her father was deceased at the time of her marriage is necessarily true!
