Sorry - probably not helpful - but does it strike anyone else as odd that someone's mother was called Dianne and Margarethe's surname was Zelle.

Perhaps I have been doing too many cryptic style crosswords and looking for clues in my ancestors lives but if you change the letters round in Zelle you can get a similar sound to Leslie - LEZLE

Ahhhhhh.........but who's to know if she had another child and kept it quiet?

;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-)

I really must try and curb my imagination at times...... :-D

It seems the daughter of Rudolph & Mata Hari passed away at a young age, so again all lots of very interesting co-incidencs :-D

They moved to Malang on the East side of the island of Java and had two children, Norman-John MacLeod (30 January 1897 – 27 June 1899) and Louise Jeanne MacLeod (2 May 1898 – 10 August 1919).

Another, rather tenuous link I must say (haha), one ruled out.

Cynthia

As Traceiy said, anything is possible!!

Cant remember what I put into Google to get the Mata Hari link, but it seemed to bear some resemblance to what Evelyn has told us:
Diane never mentioned her mother
Came back to the UK with her father
Had a private allowance (wealthy family?)
Etc, etc so just had to post it!

I never got as far as Rudolphs mothers name...............hmmmm :-0

Perhaps I was thinking about something else, then, with St Georges Road.

Have my eye on a Leslie but need to look at his officers file at Kew - sometime next week. Scottish regiment, wealthy, bit of a "cad" - well actually quite a lot of a cad! Not Robert though and no Scottish family connection as far as I can tell, yet.

Good heaven's - it's all about Mata Hari

Who married a Rudolph MacLeod.......in Amsterdam.

Rudolph's mother's name was..

Dianna. (Sweerts de Landa.)

I've googled for more info... :-0

St George's Rd...? Hmmm....can't say I remember that one Ann, but am happy to be corrected.

Absolutely anything is possible with this woman. Evelyn maintains that her mother was very well educated.....but where????

I would willing go back to my contact at the Nicholson Institute.....if we knew what her real name was.............arrrggghhh....... :(

Just going to look at the link Vanessa provided.

Thanks all. x

Yes jansmith yes I agree its def D McLeod she just needs to be ruled out now, I'm 99% its not her but it has been mentioned several times on this thread lets not leave any stone unturned, the searching that you all have done on this case is amazing and the support you have given Evelyn is heart warming, everyone we rule out helps us on the way of finding Diane. Vanessa I would say anything is possible, its only 8 years of a difference. All the normal avenues have been explored so as crazy as it sounds thinking outside the box is definitely the way to go.

Beginning to suspect that the link to Stornoway may be a red herring. Aunt Kate may have married a Macloud. Who knows what her maiden name was. She could well have been Diane´s Mother´s sister & no blood relative to Robert Macleod. It´s a very common name in the area. Or she could even have been a great aunt.
The fact that M Leslie in the 1901 census was born Woolwich could be significant, with the military connections.

In an attempt to leave no stone unturned, this article is rather interesting!!

http://www.top-biography.com/9241-Mata%20Hari

Not a Robert, but "daughter stays with father" and looks to have been born in
Indonesia! Mother from a wealthy family (private allowance??).

All speculation of course, but interesting non the less!

Edit: Another source has the husband/father as Rudolph (John) MacLeod

Can anyone view this record & the full census

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X947-FB7

Can't seem to copy the image on my iPad, but it is a female D Leslie, age 1 on the 1901 census.

Another 1 to at least rule out??

Vanessa

Vanessa Report 18 Apr 2013 13:17

Is it likely to be Diane as it would give a birth ca 1898? Now we are of the impression that Diane was economical with the truth, but she didnt get married until 1929, which would be on the older side for a first marriage. Also, what age would that make her on the birth of her children?

Or do you think this is another McLeod family member?

jansmith

jansmith Report 18 Apr 2013 13:03

looking at 1911 image it could be D McLeod

I hate all the coincidences I come across, my wee heart skips a beat. I'm off to work now but I started looking at the above that I posted and from what I can see the lady Mary Deyes maiden name is Robertson, someone earlier posted about a Leslie family with a servant Bessie Robertson. I'll have a look more later tonight but if anyone can rule this one out please feel free to look at it more in depth than I can.

Sorry for adding to the muddle on here but I can't remember if I ever asked about this one, if you click on the image her name is D McLeod, I know its spelt differently and the age is out but...... Given we don't really know that much about Diane before her marriage and she did tell a fib or two, can we could rule this one out? I saved this one back in Jan.
