Hi Jackie

Many thanks for looking, I really appreciate it, but not the right Nellie Ellis regrettably.

I will send for the marriage certificate and hope that it will throw some light on the brickwall!!

Hi Julie,

I found this but don't know if relevant.

England & Wales Christening Records, 1530-1906 about Nellie Ellis
Name: Nellie Ellis
Gender: Female
Birth Date: abt 1892
Christening Date: 11 Sep 1892
Christening Place: Ardsley, Yorkshire, England
Father's Name: Frederick Ellis
Mother's Name: Edith

I would definitely order the marriage certificate for fathers info alone.

Hi Jackie

I would really appreciate some help with the following:

I am trying to find out who are the parents of Nellie Ellis, b 1893 in Ecclesall Bierlow. She was on the 1901 census, aged 7 living with my ggparents, Leonard Smelt, b & Fanny Smelt and was shown as their niece on the census.

Fanny's sister, Ann Parratt married a William Ellis and they had four children, but Nellie was not one of them, as Ann died in childbirth in 1886.

I found two birth records on BMD in the June qtr for Nellie Ellis, Ecclesall Bierlow district and sent for one of the certificates, but the parents (Walter & Maria Ellis) do not fit in with our family tree. I was going to send for the other one, but before doing so checked out the Sheffield Local Records Office and they have two entries for 1893, one for Ecclesall Bierlow and one for Nether Hallam, yet both have dentical birth dates of 1st January 1893 so that has confused me totally. If she had been born in January she would have been 8 on the 1901 census.

I think that perhaps Leonard and Fanny changed Nellie's surname to Smelt, as I have found Nellie Smelt on the 1911 census at 17 years of age, which fits with Nellie Ellis's birth year but cannot find any birth record for a Nellie Smelt.

Rather than sending for the second birth certificate, I am wondering if perhaps I would be better ordering Nellie Smelt's marriage certificate to find out whether her father was called Ellis.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Julie
