OMG, there are Specsavers on the ER....

Imagine that, they name a family after a shop....how weird?

We often advise people to check electoral rolls also. In this case, I would suggest he try looking for Specsavers first of all.

He might want to also look in the yellow pages?

Or simply under the bed?

It may be that he needs to concentrate his search more.

Quite often these nicknames derive from a more serious form and in this case he should look under....

I should image if he can't find fanny at his age it's time to give up?

Indeed we are Wayne Tracey. Often these symbols are used to denote missing or queried letters. For example: Her name may be Mary Joanna Shut/e a distant relative of the famed author Neville.

oh but my Jack Grass could not possibly be related to anyone who loitered on the streets in London

and pray what would be a surname S*it/e????

ever more befuddled

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 25 Jun 2010 22:52

Everyone knows that the Marijuana family changed their names when they arrived in England. No wonder that Sylvia person can't find her ancestors. They continued to use their former surname as given names down the line.

Births Sep 1886
Grass Mary Jane Barton I. 8c 600
Marriages Jun 1909
GRASS Mary Jane Barton I 8c 1153

Note that this was when they moved to Lancashire.

Another more disreputable branch moved to London where their main occupation was loitering on the streets.

Marriages Sep 1860
Weed Mary Jane Shoreditch 1c 315
Births Dec 1890
Weed Mary Jane Pancras 1b 33

The founding female member of the clan, born c1798, survived until at least 1871, lying about her birthplace of course, and using an older variant of the surname. She can be found by searching for Sarah S*it born 1798 in Middlesex in the 1871 census at Ancestry. Some of her descendants, putting on airs, retained that surname variant but added an "e" on the end. They may be seen in censuses in Gloucestershire, Yorkshire, Hampshire, Essex, etc. Obviously, theirs was the purest and most potent strain.

I hope you have all learned something.

The Rushlands are MY family! They are related to Green Fields and his illegitimate nephew Jack Straw only by marriage so don't think you will get all the names from me to put on your tree.

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 25 Jun 2010 22:22

Dear Miss Canuck, as I have said many times before, we are not related and so we do not need to share trees.

Do I need to go through the whole process with you again as you seem to be clicking on every button on the site?

Now, watch my lips.

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 25 Jun 2010 22:16

Dear Sylvia, as an experienced researcher, I am surprised that you have not searched further afield for your Grass family. Have you checked the following for suitability?

Births Mar 1866 (>99%)
Sedge John H Hollingbourn 2a 579

Births Jun 1897 (>99%)
Marsh Jack Bolton 8c 382

Births Sep 1893 (>99%)
Rye Jack Rotherham 9c 717

Births Sep 1914 (>99%)
Lawn Jack Read Mutford 4a 2189

Indeed, have you thought of looking at some of the Grass family who may have married into a foreign family?

Births Jun 1865 (>99%)
PRAIRIE Sarah Jane Lambeth 1D 419

You may need to continue searching through the Rushes.

I could find no reference to the Marijuana family.

I am very impressed by the fact that you have been researching for over 30 years and can only come to the conclusion that you were a child prodigy.

Happy hunting.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 25 Jun 2010 22:09

Green Fields is my ancestor and Jack Grass is his nephew from Northamptonshire, not Lancashire. If you were as smart as you all think you are you would have figured that out, it's what you're paid for, but I had to do it myself, now open your tree.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 25 Jun 2010 21:46

could there be any connection between your Haystack/Hayhead with my Jack Grass from Lancashire?

I've been looking for him for the last 30 years, and I know that I have searched everywhere, because I am a very experienced and competent researcher.

He was born in Leeds and lived in Scarborough

yours in anticipation

Dear Miss Gaslight, such wonderful news for you! I do hope that you are able to find William's brother Norman. If you get stuck, there are some very able researchers on this site who will be able to help you. However, some do live in outlandish places and may not be au fait with English history.

Dear Robert, as I have stated before, the helpers on this site are not related to you...for which you may be eternally grateful.

Although I am not as skilful as other helpers on this site, I have made an effort and wondered if this gentleman is part of the family Tracey has been looking for?

Marriages Mar 1839 (>99%)

SPECKS Benjamin Liverpool 20 251

If I can be of any further assistance, please let me know.
