Have just found this on Find my past - York Union Workhouse, but no other family living there - were children "dumped" at workhouses - if speculative marriage correct Frank would be a widower in 1881

CONVEY, Kate Inmate Single F 3 1878 Daughter Of Brick Labr
York Yorkshire VIEW

Debra Report 17 Jul 2011 08:31

If the speculative marriage correct this is a possible child from that marriage.
Births Sep 1878 CONVY Catherine York 9d 51
Found this record Free BMD but ancestry does not appear to identify it.

In the 1911 census there is child Thomas born Christmas 1906 (grandchild) (see above Oct 2009) - I have his birth cert which shows mother to be a Catherine Conmy father unknown but have never been able to find a Catherine.

Can anyone see anything about this Catherine?

Many thanks
Debra

Frank Conmy c1856 b Malton or York (taken from census) is said to be a widower on his marriage cert to Margaret Barry (could be Berry but marriage cert definately states Barry) - 99.99% certain this marriage is correct - have the birth cert of their daughter Mary Beatrice, mother recorded as Margaret Conmy formerly Berry.

Based on this I have found a POSSIBLE first marriage but if correct the wife dies 1879 ie before Frank A Conmy (c1882 - Market Weighton 1901 census)

ALL SPECULATION!!!! - (Surname Conmy often recorded as Convey)
Births Mar 1859 BOYNE Catherine York 9d 34
Marriages Dec 1876 Boyne Catherine to Convey Francis York 9d 117
Deaths Sep 1879 Convey Catherine 20 York 9d 29

On this basis need to find another marriage or a mother for Frank Jnr

Any help appreciated.

Thanks Debra

Dea

I haven't forgotten your help, I ordered the birth cert for what I thought was Mary Conmy daughter of Frank (older sister of Catherine) but it was totally wrong. Was about to order Catherine's birth cert when I found a website for a historical dept in York. They are doing some digging for me at the moment, the lady that is helping is on holiday until Wednesday, will let you know if she finds anything. In the absence of anything new will order the cert of what I believe is Catherine's birth.

Keen to sort this part of my tree out now as my Gran the last surviving child of Mary Beatrice Conmy sadly passed away on the 10 April 2011.

Have a good Easter.

Hi Dea

Likewise, I haven't been able to find anything relating to any of the names on the certificate.

I think my next move may have to be to order the birth cert of what I believe is Catherine (the daughter of Frank in the 1861 census) as that should give the mother's name - hopefully it should say Catherine Ennegan

Hi Debra,

That is a very interesting find.

I 'have' been looking but have not come up with anything helpful.

The witnesses are not easy to follow either so no help there! and I can find absolutely no other reference to the name 'Ennegan'.

I really don't know if this marriage cert is 'your' family or not but I will keep looking.

Everingham is about 5miles from Pocklington - the only RC Chapel I can find is in the grounds of the stately home - see link above.

Were Frank & Catherine allowed to marry in it as they in the service of the stately home???

Hi Debra,

I am off to bed in a minute but I would be very interested to have a look at that 'Ennegan' name on the cert. - Are you able to scan it and send me a copy? If so, I will pm you my direct e-mail address - let me know.

I could not follow that name back as it does not seem to exist ???

Good idea - I think her name must also be mistranscribed.

My first thought was that it would be Finnegan but I am also inclined towards something starting with a 'H' which was not pronounced, e.g Henegan / Hennigan / Henaghan - these names do exist, whereas Ennegan doesn't seem to !

It will be interesting to see what info this brings.

Post the details on here as soon as you get it.

No I am in the UK but at the moment I am having to work very long hours - not by choice, just shear volume of work and not enough people to do it.

My Tree is my way of unwinding!

Have a good day.

Hi Dea

Hope you have had an enjoyable day with your grandson.

Thank you for your continued hardwork. I agree with your findings it is too much of a coincidence and then it make this birth I found last night fit. I marked it as a possible only, because the 1861 census in which Thomas appears state his place of birth as Ireland.

POSSIBLE BIRTH
Name: Thomas Conry (Conmy)
Year of Registration: 1852 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: York County: Yorkshire - East Riding, Yorkshire - North Riding, North Yorkshire, Yorkshire - West Riding Volume: 9d Page: 26

Now, this looks interesting ?????

Remember, we have an Arthur Conmy married to a Catherine, who was posted on
1st page of thread, well I was looking for a marriage for 'your' Frank to a Catherine.

Arthur + Catherine had a Catherine Croghan with them on 1861 (probably the mother)?
so, I think it is almost certain that Arthur married 'Croghan, on the marriage register.

On the very same page, look at the other couple who married at the same time !!!

It is a 'Frank' and a 'Catherine' with a suspiciously similar surname - What do you think??

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriages Jun 1852
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Conby Frank Pocklington 9d 132
Couby Frank Pocklington 9d 132
Coumy Arthur Pocklington 9d 132
Croghan Catherine Pocklington 9d 132
Ennegan Catherine Pocklington 9d 132

I had thought they would have been married in Ireland though as their first child was born there, but it is certainly worth a thought don't you think?

Have to go and collect little grandson for the day just now but will work on it later.

Apologies Debra,

The John who went to America is NOT Frank's brother but he may well be related in some way.

Too many Johns,Thomas's + Franks !!! - 'That' John is the one from the 1861 census which Glitter Baby posted on page one of this thread which was not the correct one as parents were Arthur + Catherine!!

The 'snippet' was from Family search site, and no - I haven't found a birth for Frank yet ..... drat !!!!!!!!!!!

I will keep looking.
