The registrar attended the marr to oversee the signing of the register; in 1842 only CofE, jews and quakers were authorized to keep official m.regos, and St Ignatius is an RC church.

Unfprtunately, I don't have a sub, so can't see the 1851 image to check Alice's marital status.
Could someone supply this, please.

I suspect a mix-up in generations here.
Could it be that James born 1881 is the son of Robert born 1842 and that Robert's parents are James & Alice who married in 1842? Then Mary says that the marriage certificate says James' father is Robert. So we would have:
Robert.
His son James married Alice Cooper.
His son Robert born 1842.
His son James born 1881.

I am trying to find the parents of James Swarbrick b:1882 Lancashire.
I know he married Alice Cooper in 1842 at St. Ignatius Chuch in Preston.

On their marriage cert., it gives Robert as being James father., but I have no more nformation about him Can anyone help?

Any info., would be much appreciated
