Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 6 Feb 2010 21:26

I'll take a slow look, but my immediate thought is have you got the correct 1st marriage?

Was she really that young ?

Do you have her father recorded on a marriage that you KNOW to be correct?

Peter Report 6 Feb 2010 21:13

Hello all,

I am pieceing together the life of a relation of mine, and it is a little confusing. If I add my findings here can others check to see if I am on the right lines or whether I am being mistaken?

Christiana Pattison was born in 1868 in Stokesley, Yorkshire the daughter of James and Hannah Pattison. She is living with her family in 1881:

Household:

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability

She was married in September 1881 to James Sorrell, and the couple seemed to have settled in Redcar, North Yorkshire, and had at least three children (1891 Census, 1 Albert Place, Redcar, Yorkshire). These children were:

1 - Thomas Sorrell - b 1885
2 - Alfus Sorrell - b 1888
3 - John W. Sorrell - 1890

Here in 1891 her birthplace is recorded as Stokesley, North Yorkshire. James Sorrell was working as an employed joiner. I cannot find a death for James, but it seems that Christiana married under her married name of Sorrell to Thomas Stephenson in 1894; she was recorded as a widow, although strangely her father was not recorded on the marriage certificate. No father was mentioned at all.

In 1901 she and her husband Thomas Stephenson (a plater helper) and two daughters are living in St. Hilda`s, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire and although the document states she was a year older than she actually was, it also records herself as being born in Redcar, Yorkshire.

Her two daughters are:

Margaret Stephenson, b 1895
Seliana Stephenson, b 1900

Both girls were born in Middlesbrough.

I can see no sign of Christiana in the 1911 although the only suitable death I can find in for 1923 in Thirsk.

Can anyone see Christiana in the 1911? Also, do my findings seem correct? Something just doesn't seem right to me with this; for example, why can I not find a death for James Sorrell, and why are her young boys (Sorrell) not living with her and Thomas Stephenson in 1901. I've not even found the boys in 1901. Also, when Christiana and Thomas Stephenson married, why did she not mention her father James Pattison?

I'd be glad of any help!

Thank you!
